‘Watch your drinks’, ‘Don’t leave your drinks unattended’, ‘Stay close to your friends’ etc.. are some of the sentences that every girl who goes out for partying is familiar with. While our elders always warn us and ask us to be cautious, we think that they are being over-protective and are always so concerned. But, the question is, really is it? Is their concern wrong? Are they being over-protective? The answer to all these questions is NO. With all the increasing crimes, specially against females, they are bound to worry about their daughters, sisters and friends. One such heinous crime which is on rise these days is ‘Date-Rape’. It is a sexual assault or a forced sexual activity on the victim without his/her consent, which is facilitated using a drug. In other words, a person, who can be someone you met recently, your friend or a complete stranger, slips drugs in your drink to make you unconscious and take advantage of you sexually. Drugs used to attempt date rapes are called ‘Date Rape Drugs’. To understand more clearly about these drugs, let’s have a look at the following facts:

1. Date rape drugs affect the victim very quickly, within few seconds, the victim starts to become weak, confused and may even pass out. Due to the effect of these drugs, you don’t remember what happened with you while you were drugged and sometimes, heavy dosage can even cause seizures and death.

2. Date rape drugs are also called ‘Club Drugs’ as they are used most often in clubs. Some common date rape drugs are:
• Flunitrazepam (Rohypnol), it is also called ‘Roofies’.
• Gamma Hydroxybutyric Acid (GHB), this drug is also called ‘Liquid Ecstasy’.
• Ketamine, it is also called ‘Special K’.

3. At times, alcohol is also included in date rape drugs because its heavy intake can cause impaired judgement, reduced reaction time and can cloud thinking. It renders the victim physically helpless and puts him/her at risk for unwanted sexual activity being forced onto them.

But, sexual intercourse can be traced and urine sample can also be checked to detect presence of drugs in the body.

5. Date rape is the most common rape (78%) with 1 in every 4 girls falling prey to this crime before turning 25 and 3 out of every 5 girls are expected victim of drug rape before they reach 18.

6. Although, girls are prone to drug rape, guys should be careful too. Due to increase in number of male rape cases, boys should take care and be cautious as they can be raped too. If not rape, they can be drugged for the purpose of stealing, kidnapping etc.

Protect yourself

Now that you know all about the ‘Date Rape Drugs’, it would be wise to keep in mind the following points next time you go out with friends, as your safety is in your own hands

1. NEVER accept drinks from others, be it your friend or co-worker. No one should be trusted blindly. Always get your drinks on your own and if someone offers to buy you a drink, refuse politely.

2. Watch your drink and never leave it unattended even for brief durations. Even if you have to, for some reasons, then don’t take the same drink again, take another one.

3. Stay with your friends and if possible try to go with at least one non-drinking friend as then there will be someone to look out for everyone.

4. If you suspect that you’ve been drugged, seek help immediately, call 100, seek legal help, tell police exactly what you remember.

5. Lastly, even after all the precautions something happens, know that IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT that this has happened, fight for yourself, seek justice and live gracefully.
