Mumbai: The mass movement of 180-Km ‘Long March’ to Mumbai by angry farmers of Maharashtra against the Maharashtra Government, on their false promises on loan waiver, has reached Thane, as per report. The farmers are angry over the non-fulfillment of Fadnavis government’ promise of complete loan waiver. They are accusing the government of drafting ‘Anti-farmers policies’ which has led to several farmers suicide. The march started on March 6 from CBS Chowk, Central Nashik and are heading towards Mumbai through Mumbai-Agra National Highway. The ‘Long March’ is participated by around 30,000 farmers and as per sources, they will become as huge as 50-60,000 when they reach Mumbai.

The farmers have the eventual plan to ‘gherao’ (encircle) Vidhan Bhawan and demand the complete loan waiver along with electricity bill waiver and the implementation of recommendations of Swaminathan Commission. “We also want the state government to refrain from forceful acquisition of farm lands in the name of development projects like the super highway and the bullet train,” said the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) secretary, Raju Desle. Desle also alleged that around 1,753 farmers have committed suicide after Maharashtra government announced conditional loan waiver of only 34,000 Crore.

The ‘Long March’ is organised by AIKS and are led by CPI(M) (Communist Party of India (Marxist)) MLA Jiva Pandu Gavit, AIKS national head, Ashok Dhavle and other leaders. The farmers can be seen with LEFT’s flags and in huge numbers. As per the allegations by AIKS, the government had assured the farmers loan waiver after their unprecedented protest last year. However, the government failed to fulfill their assurance and has resulted into this ‘Long March’.

As per TOI’s source in Police department, the march will be stopped at Azad Maidan itself and will not be allowed to reach Vidhan Bhawan. The Maharashtra government is keeping it’s close eye on the march and is anticipated to act at the right time. We need to wait and watch the action plan of Maharashtra Government over this mass farmers movement.
