In a chilling incident on Monday, Aug 30, a senior civic woman official from Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) was mercilessly attacked with a sharp knife by a hawker who injured three fingers of the woman official and injured her bodyguard too. The woman official is identified as Kalpita Pimple who is deployed in TMC as Assistant Municipal Commissioner (AMC), and the attacker is identified as Amar Yadav. The incident took place while Pimple was on a visit to oversee the anti-encroachment drive carried out at Kasarvadavali junction, Thane on Monday.
The incident has attracted humongous public uproar and has brought the police in the limelight. Public is questioning the maintenance of law and order in the city, and fear of law in the minds of criminals in the city. The accused has been arrested and is in police custody, investigation is underway, informed the Kasarvadavali police station official. The incident has frightened the common men as they say that if a government official is not safe in the city, then one can imagine the status of fear among the common man.
Pimple and her bodyguard, Somnath Maruti Palve, hired privately by TMC, are admitted in Jupiter Hospital where the doctors are attempting to stitch their chopped fingers to her hands. Pimple lost two fingers while Palve lost one finger in the attack, police informed.
The Additional Municipal Commissioner, Sanjay Hirwade, affirmed that such cowardly attack would be impervious to their anti-encroachment drives against illegal street encroachers. “The Thane civic administration is not scared of such cowardly attacks on its officials by encroachers. Rather, it will intensify the action against such illegal hackers and builders. We generally carry our own as well as police security while carrying out such drives. In future if needed we will ask for more security force,” Hirwade was quoted as saying in an Indian Express report.
The Senior Inspector of Police at Kasarvadavali police station, Kiran Khairnar, informed media reporters that the accused has been booked under IPC sections for attempting murder, deterring a public officer to perform his duty and other relevant sections. Khairnar informed that the accused will be produced in the court on Tuesday.
