The instant messaging app, WhatsApp, is said to be working on a new feature to allow users to set the lifespan of an image shared with another user. Yes, if a leaked information is to be believed then WhatsApp may incorporate the feature of “self-destruction” while sending an image to another user. In a simple language, it means that if a WhatsApp user wishes to send an image to another user with an expiry date for this image then it will be possible with the new feature that WhatsApp is rumoured to be working on.

The information is shared by WABetainfo on their Twitter handle which hints at WhatsApp’s new exciting feature for its users. “WhatsApp is working on self-destructing photos in a future update for iOS and Android. • Self-destructing photos cannot be exported from WhatsApp. • WhatsApp didn’t implement a screenshot detection for self-destructing photos yet. Same concept from Instagram Direct. ⏱” read the tweet by WABetainfo on Wednesday, Mar 3.

If one has to make a reference to any existing identical feature, then it will be similar to the ‘story’ feature of Facebook and Instagram where the story disappears automatically after 24 hours of its uploading. Though, the new WhatsApp feature may not be completely identical to the ‘story’ feature of Facebook but it will resemble it in some way.
The new feature is said to disallow the user from being notified of any screenshot being taken by the receiver before the image disappeared from the chat. Yes, the sender wouldn’t be notified if the receiver takes a screengrab of the self-destruction/disappearing image sent by him/her.
Though the new WhatsApp feature excites many, there are many who apprehend that harassment will soar high with the implementation of the new controversial feature that WhatsApp is said to be working on. However, it is not confirmed yet if WhatsApp is planning to implement such rumoured feature in the manner it is reported in several sections of tech media or it plans to bring it with some safety measures. Or for all you know, this story might just be another rumour and WhatsApp may not implement any such feature and the news comes out to be a hoax.
