Uttarakhand Flash Flood: How a Sunday turned Havoc for People in Chamoli District; Rescue Operations Underway

Soon, the Disaster Response Force of Centre and State came to the rescue of the affected people as National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams rushed to Chamoli district to provide relief to the affected people, Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat said on Sunday. Several teams of Indian Army and Air Force were also deployed at the site to ameliorate the situation. Ambulances were also deployed at the affected site.

The ill-visioned flash flood, on Sunday, Feb 7, in the heavenly place of Uttarakhand has menaced the lives of the people in Chamoli district as it swept away many lives in its monstrous waves. A video of the catastrophic waves of the flash flood running between the hilly regions of Uttarakhand surfaced online which wrenched the hearts of the nation. The Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand, Om Prakash, feared casualties of more than 100 after the news broke of the unfortunate incident in Chamoli district on Sunday.

The situation worsened after a glacier broke, on Sunday, in the Tapovan-Reni area of Chamoli district, aggravating Dhauliganga and Alaknanda Rivers to damage the houses in Chamoli district and also the ongoing Rishi Ganga Power Project. As per Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) police, at least 9 bodies were recovered near the National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC), as per a report by ANI.

The state CM briefed the media informing that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and President Ram Nath Kovind called him to express grief over the unfortunate incident and assured all possible help. The CM announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 4 lac to kin of each one who lost their lives in the tragic incident.

“The State Government will provide financial assistance of Rs. 4 lac each to the kin of the deceased,” said Uttarakhand CM Rawat while addressing a press conference on Sunday, quoted ANI. He said that several cattles are feared of being swept away in the disastrous flash flood. He also mentioned that around 125 human beings are also missing while concluding that the number may ascend as the search operations conclude.

“We are assuming that around 125 people are missing. The number can be higher.” informed the state CM in the press conference. Global leaders and Bollywood biggies have expressed their condolences to the families of the deceased.
