After a heart wrenching video of dumping of elderly destitutes from Madhya Pradesh’s Indore went viral, the Shivraj Singh Chauhan led state government came to the angry eyes of the netizens. The social media got flooded with messages admonishing Indore Civic body’s behaviour. The Congress party leader and General Secretary, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, also lambasted Indore Civic body for their act of shame.
“इंदौर, मप्र की ये घटना मानवता पर एक कलंक है। सरकार और प्रशासन को इन बेसहारा लोगों से माफी माँगनी चाहिए और ऑर्डर लागू कर रहे छोटे कर्मचारियों पर नहीं बल्कि ऑर्डर देनेवाले उच्चस्थ अधिकारियों पर ऐक्शन होना चाहिए। (This incident from Indore, Madhya Pradesh is a blot on humanity. The government and administration must apologize to these destitutes, and take action against those superior office bearers who passed such orders rather than on those who executed it.)” tweeted Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra attached a video in her tweet purportedly shot by the villagers present at the spot where the civic body officials allegedly tried to abandon the elderly homeless people. The video got widespread criticism and the Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan ordered a thorough investigation in the case and to take the required action against the culprits. Subsequently, the Deputy Commissioner of Indore Municipal Corporation was suspended in the case. Additionally, two contractual employees were also shown the door for the shameful act in the incident.
The Indore Municipal Commissioner, Pratibha Pal, clarified that during the winter season, the civic body tries to shift the homeless people to shelter, however, some disappear to their own desired places. “In the winter season, the corporation shifts the homeless to shelters. Some people readily go to these shelters but there were some who went elsewhere on their own,” said Pal, quoted ANI.
While making a reference to the disturbing incident of abandonment of destitutes, Pal termed it as “unfortunate” and reiterated that appropriate action has been taken, while an investigation is underway. “Yesterday’s incident is unfortunate and action has been taken against the negligence. Additional Commissioner is now investigating the case,” Pal was quoted as saying in ANI’s report.
