‘Jail Tourism’ Initiative launched by Maha CM, Recalls Imprisonment of BalaSaheb Thackeray in Yerwada Jail

The Chief Minister of the state, Uddhav Thackeray, launched the historic initiative via Video Conferencing in the presence of the Deputy Chief Minister, Ajit Pawar. Pawar was physically present at the Yerawada jail to take part in the unique initiative set in motion by the Maha Vikas Aaghadi (MVA) led alliance government of Maharashtra.

The Maharashtra government made a very unique initiative called ‘Jail Tourism’ initiative on Tuesday, Jan 26 for students, law enthusiasts, history enthusiasts and citizens to experience the historical events that took place in the jails of the state. The initiative kick-started from Yerwada jail in Maharashtra’s Pune district.

The Chief Minister of the state, Uddhav Thackeray, launched the historic initiative via Video Conferencing in the presence of the Deputy Chief Minister, Ajit Pawar. Pawar was physically present at the Yerawada jail to take part in the unique initiative set in motion by the Maha Vikas Aaghadi (MVA) led alliance government of Maharashtra.

“CM Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray today launched a unique jail tourism initiative. This will help school and college students, history enthusiasts and citizens to experience vignettes from our history.” read the tweet by the Chief Minister Office (CMO) of Maharashtra on Tuesday.

While speaking on the initiative by CM Uddhav Thackeray, the Additional Director General (ADG) of the Yerawada jail, Sunil Ramanand, highlighted the historical events that took place in the Yerawada Jail. “Yerwada Jail is close to 150 years old and is one of the most important prisons in India. Many important events, leaders are part of this prison’s history. A visit here will help students understand our freedom struggle better,” said ADG Ramanand, quoted ANI.

While talking about the history attached to the Yerawada jail, the Shiv Sena supremo and son of late HinduHriday Samrat Bala Saheb Thackeray, Uddhav Thackeray recalled the imprisonment of his late father in Yerawada jail where he along with his mother used to come to meet him.

Notably, the accused of the monstrous & deadliest terrorist attack 26/11 of 2008, Ajmal Kasab, was hanged in Yerawada jail itself. Even the Pune-pact was signed in the same jail, hence the jail has witnessed several historical events that the visitors under ‘Jail Tourism’ initiative can take a notice of after their visit to the jail. In 2019, Yerawada jail came into news after around 30 prisoners of open jail of Yerawada jail participated in playing drums during the Ganesh Chaturthi celebration for a Mandal.

“The prisoners were trained for 2 months & they were very enthusiastic for it. They are prisoners of open jail.” ADG Ramanand had said about the event at that moment.
