Around 15 fire tenders rushed to the spot to douse off the wildfire that disturbed the whole nation the whole day on Thursday. “Contractor’s men were working on that floor (where the fire broke out) and when the fire brigade officials went there, they found 5 completely burnt bodies,” briefed Dy. CM Pawar, quoted ANI. In his briefing, Pawar also informed that 2 deceased men among the 5 casualties hailed from Uttar Pradesh, 2 from Maharashtra’s Pune and 1 from Bihar. The Dy. As per a media report, one of the plausible causes of fire is perhaps the welding work at the spot as the building was under construction for a new vaccine preparation, not for CoronaVirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). “I was informed that preparation was going on at this building (site of fire) to make Rotavirus vaccine…The place where the COVID-19 vaccine is manufactured was not affected.” said Dy. CM Ajit Pawar while briefing about the incident, reported ANI.

The Chairman & Managing Director of SII, Cyrus S. Poonawalla, released the statement informing about the ex-gratia of Rs. 25 lacs being announced for the deceased in the incident in addition to that required by the statutory norms. “Today is an extremely sorrowful day for all of us at SII. Regrettably, there were losses of lives in the fire that broke out in our under installation facility situated at the Special Economic Zone at Manjri. We are deeply saddened and offer our condolences to the families of the departed. In this regard, we will be offering a compensation of INR 25 lakhs to each of the families, in addition to the mandated amount as per the norms.” read the statement from the SII Chairman and Managing Director.
