A tragic incident got reported from Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram city where a couple suffered severe burn injuries in a bid to threaten the police of setting themselves on fire if evicted from their house, the police officials informed. The burn injuries were so grievous that the couple succumbed to their severe burn injuries on Monday, Dec 28. As per police officials and news reports, a court in Kerala passed an eviction order against the couple citing encroachment and the police reached the couple’s house to execute the court’s order on Dec 22.
The couple identified as Rajan (47) and his wife Ambili (40) began to protest against the police action and threatened to immolate themselves if evicted from their house. Upon failure to see any effect of their threat on the police & the revenue officials, the couple first poured kerosene on their body and subsequently ended up lighting a lighter. Rajan held Ambili’s hand while holding an already lit lighter, police official stated.
The police tried to foil the alleged suicide attempt by Rajan and Ambili, however, the lighter fell on the couple who caught fire immediately. The couple were rushed to the nearest hospital, however, they couldn’t survive due to the severity of their burn injuries on Monday, police claimed.
The couple has left behind their two sons, Renjith and Rahul, who alleged that the police tried to forcefully stop the couple from attempting the suicide and in the same failed bid, the lighter accidentally touched their parents’ body which resulted in their death. The Medical College Hospital authorities informed that Rajan succumbed to his burn injuries on Sunday, while his wife breathed last on Monday.
“The incident took place on December 22 in Nellimoodu Village. We reached the house of Rajan to attach their property based on a court order. To resist the eviction process, Rajan threatened to commit suicide and started to pour kerosene on Ambili and himself,” stated the police officials, reported ANI. A police official attempted to foil Rajan’s bid, however, the lighter touched the couple’s body and they suffered severe injuries due to the fire, the official stated.
The relatives of the deceased claim that the couple did not have the plan to end their lives, however, they failed in their attempt to halt the police action of eviction which led to the tragic death of Rajan and Ambili. The police have started investigating the case to file their report on the incident.
