Anna Hazare Warns to Resume Hunger Strike, Alleges “No Work on the Earlier Assurance by Modi Government”

While recalling his hunger strike in February 2019, Hazare claimed that he had ended his hunger strike on Feb 5, 2019 after he was provided with a written assurance by the then Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh for constituting a high-powered committee to contemplate over the recommendations by Swaminathan Commission and other agriculture related concerns. However, there isn't any action on the assurance, hence he wishes to commence a fierce hunger strike against the Central Government.

The crusader of grand Indian Anti-Corruption Movement of 2011, Anna Hazare, has broken his silence over farmers’ rights and has warned of intense hunger strike if his demands including the implementation of recommendations by MS Swaminathan Commission are not met by the Central Government. The 83-year old social activist from Ralegaon Siddhi, in his letter to Union Agriculture Minister Narender Singh Tomar, announced on Monday, Dec 13 that if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led Central Government fails to implement the recommendations by MS Swaminathan Commission and does not meet his other demands, he will be left with no choice than to call for a fierce hunger strike.

While sending the letter to the incumbent Union Agriculture Minister, the Padma Bhushan awardee has also attached the official written assurance letter by erstwhile Union Agriculture Minister, Radha Mohan Singh in 2019. The letter reportedly includes the mentioning of working on the report submitted by the high powered committee by Oct 30, 2019. However, the assurance, according to Anna Hazare, hasn’t been brought into effect yet, hence he chooses to commence the hunger strike.

“The Centre had assured that it would take appropriate actions on the demands on the basis of the committee’s report. Since nothing has been done till date to that effect, thinking has started to resume the hunger strike which was called off on February 5, 2019,” said Hazare, quoted ANI. The senior activist has promised to reveal his schedule of hunger strike once the plan is decided and locked.
