The day finally arrived for at least 45 newly elected Rajya Sabha members on Wednesday, July 22, as they took oath in the Rajya Sabha, administered by the chairman, M. Venkaiah Naidu. The election for vacant Rajya Sabha seats took place in June 2020. Amid the swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday, all lenses were focused on newly inducted Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, Jyotiraditya Scindia. The former staunch Congress party young leader, Scindia, caught the attention of the nation as he was seen greeting his rival Congress party biggie, Digvijay Singh, in the upper house of the parliament.
Out of 45 newly elected Rajya Sabha members, 18 belong to BJP which include names like Sumer Singh Solanki from MP, Nabam Rebia from Arunachal Pradesh, Bhubaneswar Kalita & Biswajit Daimary from Assam, Vivek Thakur from Bihar, Ram Chander Jangra from Haryana among others. Apart from BJP members, 8 Congress party members also took oath in the Rajya Sabha which included the name of Digvijay Singh from MP. Due to Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), the swearing-in ceremony was held in the Rajya Sabha chamber, an unprecedented move to maintain physical distancing norms of COVID-19.

With a total of 388 members, 303 members in Lok Sabha and 85 members in Rajya Sabha, BJP is winning from all 4 corners. While former Congress leader, Sachin Pilot, revolted against his own party, a dynast was lured into ditching his own nourished party and joined the central power. Surely, the future must have seemed brighter to him for changing his course.
Jyotiraditya Scindia, a young Indian politician, belonging to the House Of Scindia that once governed Gwalior has a new attire and a new designation too. The former Congress Member of Parliament (MP) reportedly resigned from the party on March 10 and soon after joined BJP, the rival saffron party. The resignation definitely looked staged. Scinida was expelled for ‘anti-party activities’ the moment the word of his withdrawal from the party was sent out.
“Congress President has approved the expulsion of Jyotiraditya Scindia from the Indian National Congress with immediate effect for anti-party activities,” read a statement issued by General Secretary, KC Venugopal, All India Congress Committee (AICC) back then.

Over the past few years that the country has been run by BJP in the centre as well as in several states, Congress party has repeatedly been called incompetent, slow-witted and not worthy of the trust and reliance of the public it received in the past. Jyotiraditya too, points out that the party has indeed lost its charm and is not what it used to be. Right after the death of his father, Madhavrao Scindia, Jyotiraditya joined Congress and had been with the party for 18 years, until he declared “I quit’ in March this year.
Scindia publicized his resignation with a tweet that came as shocking to the nation as it would be to see China befriending US President, Donald Trump, in the current situation.
“Having been a primary member of the Congress Party for the last 18 years, it is time for me to move on. I am tendering my resignation from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress and as you well know, this is a path that has been drawing itself out over the last year. While my aim and purpose remain the same as it has always been from the very beginning, to serve the people of my state and country, I believe I am unable to do this anymore within this party.” read the tweet by Scindia as he resigned from the Congress party in Madhya Pradesh attaching a full Black & White copy of his resignation, addressed to Sonia Gandhi, signed and dated March 9, 2020.

The leader also reportedly met Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, and Union Home Minister, Amit Shah. 21 Congress’ Member of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) that rode their journey along with Scindia tabled their resignations too to topple the Kamal Nath-led government in the state. It is also estimated by the former Home Minister of Madhya Pradesh and BJP leader, Bhupendra Singh, that the number of resignations from Congress could rise up to 30.
The staged exit may point to his dissatisfaction towards the party, but the decision was solely driven by his preference for political convenience and his ambitions. With Jyotiraditya finally ‘returning home’, BJP leader and his aunt, Yahodhara Scindia, along with all the benefitted party members, were happy and ecstatic to welcome Jyotiraditya Scindia in the party. However, with Scindia joining the Rajya Sabha soon enough has made his opponents to raise questions that turning his back on Congress won him the fulfilment of his ambitious motives.
The leader also addressed Sachin Pilot’s situation and tweeted in support of Pilot who is anticipated to topple the Ashok Gehlot government in Rajasthan. “Sad to see my erstwhile colleague, @SachinPilot too, being sidelined and persecuted by Rajasthan CM, @ashokgehlot51. Shows that talent and capability find little credence in the @INCIndia.” read the tweet by now turned saffron, Scindia.

Be it Sachin Pilot’s aggressive revolt or Jyotiraditya’s exit, it is a fact that Congress party is losing its members due to its alleged lack of appreciation and an eye for capability. The BJP is able to poach the ‘think tanks’ of the Congress party while the oldest national party, Congress party, is miles away to welcome the change in it’s long run dynastic politics.
