The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Debendra Nath Ray’s body was, on Monday, July 13, found hanging from a rope in Hematabad, West Bengal. The incident took place in Bindal which is said to be the MLA’s village. The BJP has described it as a murder. Debendra recently joined BJP from Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)). He took the BJP membership after the Lok Sabha elections in 2019. West Bengal’s BJP unit suspected of a foul play in Ray’s murder and speculated that Ray was murdered and then hanged to portray as a suicide case.
The post-mortem report stated that the death occurred due to hanging and no other injuries have been detected, police officials informed. West Bengal Police stated that a suicide note was found from the pocket of the MLA’s shirt, in which he blamed two people for his death. The police also suspect it to be a matter of financial transactions where Ray was duped of crores and he was under depression from past many days.
However, Ray’s family and the BJP claimed that he was ‘murdered by TrinaMool Congress (TMC)’, a charge denied by the ruling party in the state. Ray’s family members and the BJP have demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the MLA’s death. A delegation comprising of senior BJP leaders like Kailash Vijayvargiya, Babul Supriyo, Arvind Menon, etc. met President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, and Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, on Tuesday, July 14, & submitted a letter accusing TMC for endorsing “lawlessness in the state”.

Ray had won the assembly elections on a CPI(M) ticket from the reserved seat of Hematabad Scheduled Caste, but he joined BJP after the Lok Sabha elections last year. However, he did not resign from the CPI(M) as an MLA. A senior district police official said that Ray’s body was found hanging near a closed shop in Hematabad area on Monday morning. He said that the police have started investigation in the case and the forensic team has reached the spot.
Demand for CBI investigation
BJP leader Rahul Sinha demanded a CBI inquiry into the alleged murder of the BJP MLA. He said, “We demand CBI inquiry into the killing of BJP MLA from Hematabad, Debendra Nath Ray. Trinamool Congress is behind this killing and has made it look like a suicide. I request West Bengal CM to order CBI inquiry to find the truth behind the killing,”.

TMC leader, Derek O’brien, termed the tweet by the BJP National president as misleading and in haste to make political mileage. “BJP’s national president himself is also spreading fake news. He is competing with his IT troll ring leaders. Jumping to conclusions without facts in desperation to score political points. Instead, he would do well to stand by the deceased’s family. Every death is a tragedy. Sad,” read the tweet by the senior TMC leader.
