Vikas Dubey, a dreadful history-sheeter from Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur, responsible for the deaths of 8 policemen on the night of Friday, July 3, was handcuffed finally on Thursday, July 9. However, he was encountered on the early morning of Friday, July 11, as he tried to elude the police by snatching their pistol. The news has stunned many, while many already knew the fate of the bounty carrying criminal from Kanpur.

The opposition leader and former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav, raised suspicion on the encounter as he claims that Dubey knew ‘some secrets’ about the Uttar Pradesh government that made him gunned down. “Actually, the car is not overturned, the government has been saved from turning over the secret,” read the tweet from Yadav when roughly translated in English.
दरअसल ये कार नहीं पलटी है, राज़ खुलने से सरकार पलटने से बचाई गयी है.

Congress party’s General Secretary, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, also raised a serious question of “what about those who helped and supported the criminal?”. In a tweet, the Congress party’s executive leader stated that though the criminal (Vikas Dubey) has been killed but what about the ones who gave him protection all these years. “The Criminal is over, what about the crime and the people who protected him?” a rough translation of Priyanka’s tweet on Vikas Dubey’s encounter on Friday.
अपराधी का अंत हो गया, अपराध और उसको सरंक्षण देने वाले लोगों का क्या?

Dubey is accused of the brutal killing of 8 policemen who had geared up to apprehend him at his Kanpur house on Friday. Dubey was finally arrested in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh on the morning of Thursday, July 9. After being on the run for 5 days, fleeing across 4 states, his effortlessly flawless attempt at staying hidden came to an end as he was spotted at the Mahakal temple in Ujjain and was apprehended then and there.

It is still unclear how Vikas, who was last spotted in Faridabad, Haryana on Wednesday, July 8, ended up in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh the very next morning with the police tailing him. Vikas was reportedly spotted outside the Ujjain Mahakal temple at 7 am on Thursday trying to enter the temple through it’s back gate. However, it has also been reported that he was buying prayer offerings to submit inside the temple and was recognized by the shopkeeper who immediately dialled the police and also alarmed the security guards.
On being questioned by the guards at the temple entrance, Dubey, allegedly, presented a fake ID. To his disappointment, the ID was of a much younger male, which surged the suspicion in the minds of the home guards officials present there. When meddled further, he tried to hit the guards and run away. With the appearance Dubey carried during the arrest, t-shirt and a mask, without protection, he could pass as an ordinary man.
“It is a big success for the police, Vikas Dubey is a cruel killer. The Madhya Pradesh police force was on alert. He has been arrested from Ujjain Mahakal Temple. We have informed Uttar Pradesh Police.” said Madhya Pradesh Minister, Narottam Mishra. While to some, the arrest is good news, to others it serves as the basis of speculation of nexus between the criminal and the government. The former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and the current opposition leader, Akhilesh Yadav, raised questions about whether or not taking Vikas Dubey into custody was an arrest or a case of voluntary surrender.
“We hear that the main accused in the Kanpur-Kand is now in police custody. If it is true, then the government should clarify if it was an arrest or surrender. The government should also publicize the Call Record Details (CDR) of the accused so the ‘Milibhagat’ can be revealed.” read the tweet by Akhilesh Yadav.
A story always has two sides but clearly, this one has more. “Vikas Dubey was going to Ujjain Mahakal Temple when he was identified by the security personnel. Police were informed and he confessed his identity after being pushed for it. He has been apprehended by the police and his interrogation is underway.” said Ashish Singh, Collector of Ujjain.
On contemplating over it, it is fishy that someone with almost 60 crimes in his name, managed to flee every time without a severe punishment, finally allegedly surrenders himself. The police inspector in charge of the police station around Dubey’s village was arrested under the suspicion of helping Vikas Dubey not only in his escape once but several times before, when thrown in front of the imperial judiciary.
This most wanted criminal not only drew his own arrest but also made it predictable. When being dragged by the police, “Main he Vikas Dubey hoon, Kanpur wala (I am the Vikas Dubey of Kanpur).” he could be heard announcing in the media reported video. This has raised valid questions towards the functioning of government.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Congress leader, took to her Twitter to lash out at the Yogi Adityanath led Uttar Pradesh government in the government’s modus operandi against a bounty carrying criminal. “The Uttar Pradesh government has completely failed in acting with alacrity in the ghastly Kanpur Massacre. Despite being on alert, the gangster reaching Ujjain exposes the chinks in security and points to collusion.” tweeted Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. She continued, “’No-action’ on a three-month-old letter and the name ‘Vikas’ not included in the list of noted criminals indicates that the strings of this matter are linked to high-ups. The Uttar Pradesh Government should conduct a CBI probe to ascertain all facts and bring out the links of protection to him.”
Two of Dubey’s closest allies were killed allegedly while they tried to elude the police. On Wednesday, Dubey may have escaped the hotel before the arrival of the police but Aman Dubey, his very own shadow, was shot dead in an encounter in Hamirpur. Prabhat Mishra, another one of his aides, was also killed when shot due to attempting to escape. So many sides of this story point out a ‘surrender and shelter’ scenario while there are very little notions of it being an actual arrest. A man habituated to escaping is not very likely to get caught, especially, in this manner. However, his killing has made much dust settle while much erupted in the air.
