The Mumbai police, on Monday, June 22, apprehended a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) contract staff member for allegedly molesting a 21-year old lady at a quarantine centre in Mumbai’s Malad reserved for Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) suspects. The man is identified as Amit Tatkare who is reported to be a contract labourer of BMC who called the lady to the quarantine centre by misinforming her to be COVID-19 positive, police informed.
The quarantine centre is informed to be located at New Bhoomi Park, Janakalayan Nagar, Malad, Mumbai. The lady was approached by Tatkare at the quarantine centre to tell him ‘I Love You’, police said in a report. Upon refusal to comply with Tatkare’s demand, the girl was allegedly misbehaved by him. “The BMC contract labourer called the 21 year old woman to the quarantine centre, and asked her to say ‘I Love You’ but she refused. Meanwhile, the man grabbed her hand.” said Vitthal Shinde, Senior Police Inspector, quoted ANI.
The police also confirmed that Tatkare was arrested for misbehaving with the 21-year old lady. The lady was informed by Tatkare that she is COVID-19 positive and asked her to come to the quarantine centre, where he allegedly tried to take advantage of her, police informed. However, later it was discovered that Tatkare had lied to the lady that she is positive, as she was later found to be COVID-19 negative.
The police informed that the lady filed a complaint against Tatkare and another when Tatkare was apprehended by the Charkop police on Monday itself. The accused were booked under Section 354 (Assault or Criminal Force to Woman with Intent to Outrage her Modesty) of Indian Penal Code (IPC). “On the basis of the woman’s complaint, Charkop police have registered a case against two accused under Section 354 of the IPC. One of the accused named Amit Tatkare has been arrested,” SI Vitthal Shinde informed, quoted ANI.
The news has astonished the city as the incident seems to show that criminal minded people are trying to take advantage of the current COVID-19 pandemic. The police have informed that the investigation is underway to find out if any more miscreants are also involved in the matter.
