J&K: Kashmiri Pandit Sarpanch Shot Dead, Political Parties Raise Questions

A tweet from a user showed a video of Bharti's interview where he feared an attack on him as he has returned to the valley after 6-7 years. He claimed in the interview to be cornered when asked for security cover. The video shows Bharti saying that he asked the J&K administration for security, which was denied to him.

Ajay Pandita killed in Anantnag district

The alleged killing of Kashmiri pandit sarpanch, Ajay Pandita aka Ajay Bharti, from South Kashmir’s Anantnag district in the late evening of Monday, May 8, has sent shockwaves across the nation. The 40-year old village leader representing Congress party was allegedly shot dead in his orchard at around 6pm on Monday. Ajay Pandita sustained bullet injuries on his shoulder and face. He was rushed to a nearby government hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. No group has claimed stake in the murder of the village’s elected leader.

Pandita was a known face from Larkipora model town where he headed the Luk Bawan village. Congress party alleged that Pandita was kept deprived of security cover even when he, off-late, feared an attack on him. Congress party leaders like Congress president for J&K unit, Ghulam Ahmad Mir and spokesperson, Ravinder Sharma, voiced for a judicial inquiry in the case.

“Why the slain sarpanch, belonging to minority community, was not provided adequate security,  when he was more vulnerable in the situation and reportedly informed about possible threat to his life @INCIndia.@rssurjewala,” tweeted J&K Congress party spokesperson, Ravinder Sharma.

The former Congress party president, Rahul Gandhi, also tweeted expressing grief over the alleged murder of Pandita and also expressed condolences. “My condolences to the family and friends of Ajay Pandita, who sacrificed his life for the democratic process in Kashmir. We stand with you in this time of grief. Violence will never win.,” read the tweet from Gandhi scion.

The saffron party, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), also condemned the cowardly attack on a publicly elected representative by militants. The BJP president of Jammu & Kashmir unit, Ravinder Raina, condemned the attack on the Kashmiri pandit and lashed out at the prime minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, for this ghastly attack on a publicly elected representative.
