Pregnant Elephant’s Killing in Kerala: Ratan Tata, Maneka Gandhi demand Justice

The BJP MP alleged that around 3 elephants die every 3 days in Kerala. This kind of cruelty against elephants, according to her, has led to diminishing the number of elephants to only 20,000 left in the country. She termed Malappuram district as the most violent area in Kerala which is known for its merciless killing of animals and atrocities on women. She lashed out at the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) led Kerala government over their inaction in the case.

One of the most cruel killings of an innocent elephant in Kerala has attracted millions of eyeballs and the event has been condemned by most prominent leaders of the country. A renowned and highly respected business tycoon cum philanthropist, Ratan Tata, expressed his grief over the incident and termed it as “meditated murder against other humans”. Taking it to his twitter handle, Tata wrote a heart wrenching message against this year’s probable most cruel act against innocent animals by intelligent species called humans.

“I am grieved and shocked to know that a group of people caused the death of an innocent, passive, pregnant elephant by feeding the elephant with a pineapple filled with firecrackers,” wrote Ratan Tata expressing grief over the human caused death of the pregnant elephant in Kerala.

The chairman of Tata sons and Tata Group further wrote that such act against innocent animals should be considered nothing less than a meditated murder of a human and demanded justice for the slain pregnant elephant. “Such criminal acts against innocent animals are no different than acts of mediated murder against other humans. Justice needs to prevail.” concluded Tata demanding justice for the slain elephant.

The incident is reported to have taken place in Kerala’s Malappuram district on Wednesday, May 27. A group of miscreants from Malappuram district stuffed firecrackers in a pineapple and fed it to the pregnant elephant who was out to subsume her hunger. The elephant innocently ate the pineapple which exploded in the elephant’s mouth and injured the jaws of the elephant badly.

The pain caused due to the explosion is understood to be unbearable to the elephant who entered into a nearby pond in her pursuance of relief from the pain. The elephant was reported to have ducked her mouth under the water level to soothe the injury pain. The elephant died while being in the pond. The news got viral after a Forest officer, Mohan Krishnan, on Tuesday, May 2, published a post uncovering the condemnable incident on his Facebook account. The news caused humongous furore among the animal lovers.

The former Union Minister of Women and Child Development and an animal activist, Maneka Gandhi, also raised her voice against the heart wrenching incident and questioned former Congress party chief, Rahul Gandhi, for his inaction. “Rahul Gandhi is from that area, why has he not taken action?” roared Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Sultanpur constituency on Wednesday, June 3.

“It (Malappuram district) is an extremely violent area and the government of Kerala has taken no action at all. It seems they are scared of them (panchayats in the area),” stated BJP MP Maneka Gandhi while speaking to news agency ANI on Wednesday, June 3.

As per the latest report, a First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged against unidentified people under relevant sections of Wild Life Protection Act and the hunt for them is underway.
