The Editor-in-Chief of Republic TV, Arnab Goswami, and his wife and Republic Editor, Samyabrata Ray Goswami, were allegedly attacked by two bike borne assailants while they were driving back home from their Lower Parel based news studio during the wee hours of Thursday, April 23. The car was driven by Arnab, himself, who narrated that his car was approached by two bike borne assailants who tried to break the window of his car to attack him who was at the front seat with his wife.

As per the complaint copy shared by Republic TV, Arnab accused Maharashtra Youth Congress (MYC) for this attack as the two assailants, allegedly, were nabbed and probed by his security guards. The security guards who are Arnab’s Mumbai Police attaché told him that the assailants confessed of belonging to the Youth Congress and that they were sent by Congress party “to teach Arnab a lesson”.

The incident has taken place as the aftermath of Arnab’s objectionable comment on Congress party supremo and United Progressive Alliance (UPA) head, Sonia Gandhi. Arnab had, in his debate on Republic TV on Wednesday, April 22, made controversial remarks on Sonia Gandhi and had questioned her role in the recent Palghar mob-lynching of two sadhus and their driver.

This had made the Congress party members furious on Arnab which broke on Twitter where #ArrestArnab started trending. Soon, #ISupportArnab also started trending and surpassed #ArrestArnab tweets.

The same night after his debate show got over and completing his work, Arnab along with his wife was heading towards their house where they were attacked by the miscreants. The incident took place around 500 meters away from his residence.

Soon after the attack, Arnab released a video where he narrated his ordeal that night and held Sonia Gandhi and his party responsible for the attack. He called Sonia Gandhi a “coward” and challenged that his reporting against her and her alleged wrongdoings will continue even after this attack.

Arnab reported the incident in the nearest NM Joshi Marg police station and filed a First Information Report (FIR). Arnab alleged that even after his complaint, cops downplayed the incident by registering the FIR only under Section 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) and Section 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and nothing for the assault. The two assailants are under arrest and will be produced before the magistrate to decide their fate.
