This tragic situation which has spread worldwide was declared as Public Health Emergency of International Concern and recognized as pandemic by World Health Organisation (WHO) on March 11, 2020.

Pandemic is a situation when the epidemic disease spreads across a large region, continent or worldwide and infects large number of people. In the past records, there has been numerous pandemic situations due to diseases like tuberculosis, plague, influenza pandemic, HIV/AIDS and the one of the most tragic pandemic in the world history is the ongoing Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Corona Virus which gave rise to COVID-19 is a type of virus which is most common in animals which can infect humans. It is a virus which primarily spreads from one person to another person very easily. People can also get infected by touching the contaminated surface and then their face. This has caused the ongoing outbreak which is nothing but a contagious respiratory illness.

COVID-19 infected patients show symptoms like cough, fever and shortness of breath. These symptoms, if not identified at the early stage, may lead to the death of the infected patients. There are only few precautions that can prevent COVID-19 which include maintaining hygiene by sanitizing our hands properly and maintaining cleanliness.

Social distancing is another effective and significant measure to prevent the spread of COVID-19 as it breaks the chain of transmission. This means that people should remain in their house and avoid physical contact with anyone. The Corona Virus infected persons feel flu which force them to sneeze and cough, a best means of spread of this novel virus.

There has been no specific effective medication available for the COVID-19 patients, the process to develop a vaccine is still incomplete. Many researchers and scientists from all over the world are trying to develop an effective vaccine for this virus but the virus is showing high level of resilience to their inventions. The average estimated time period for the development of any vaccine is stated to be at least 6 months to 1 year.

COVID-19, allegedly, appeared first in the Wuhan city of China and infected more than 200 countries and territories around the world. Worldwide, more than 8 lac cases of coronavirus have been reported in which more than 41 thousand persons have already died and more than 176,317 people have, reportedly, recovered. In India alone, 1397 confirmed positive cases have been reported while 35 have lost their lives. India has called for a 21 day nationwide lockdown on March 25, in order to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the country.

As per the latest records, USA has become one of most affected countries to mark the highest number of positive confirmed cases of 164,359. Italy comes at the second number for the record breaking positive confirmed cases of Corona Virus. As per reports, 101,739 showed positive for COVID-19 and 11,591 persons died in a record breaking manner. The country, in spite of having the 2nd best Medical facilities in the world, is unable to fight this pandemic disease.

COVID-19 has led to an economical degradation worldwide as many countries are lockdown for a long period and it has hampered the world’s economy. There is absolute restrictions for cultural activities and sports tournaments, even schools and colleges are asked to remain closed in many countries which is affecting studies. It is one of the worst phases the world is going through after the world war 1 and 2. This is one of the most tragic and catastrophic disasters for the mankind, which has been recorded in the history.
