COVID-19 in India: Punjab, Rajasthan Lockdown, “Janata Curfew” Observed

Amid the ongoing fear of COVID-19, Punjab government announced a complete lock down in the state on Sunday till March 31. The government though decided to keep the essential services open in the public interest. The state Chief Minister, Capt. Amarinder Singh, announced the statewide lockdown and urged citizens to faithfully abide to the 'Janata Curfew' (Public Isolation).

Janata Curfew observed in India due to COVID-19

The Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has brought the world’s largest democracy, India, to its knees as the number of affected persons soar to 341 in the country. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) confirmed on Sunday, March 22, that over 341 positive cases of COVID-19 have been reported so far. There are 5 deaths reported due to COVID-19 effect in India, among which 2 are from Maharashtra, 1 from Delhi, 1 from Karnataka & 1 from Punjab.

Amid the ongoing fear of COVID-19, Punjab government announced a complete lock down in the state on Sunday till March 31. The Punjab CM also attached an image disclosing the essential services which will remain open during the state lockdown.

The Rajasthan state governed by CM Ashok Gehlot, also announced, on Sunday, the statewide lockdown at the backdrop of COVID-19 effect. The chief minister announced that except the essential services, the other services in the state will completely be shut between March 22 – March 31.

The nation is observing “Janata Curfew” across the country on Sunday, on the appeal made by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, March 19. In the efforts to break the chain, which is COVID-19’s only way of diminishing, PM Modi appealed to the whole nation to remain isolated inside their own house on March 22. “On 22nd March 2020, let us observe a Janata Curfew and add strength to the fight against COVID-19. #IndiaFightsCorona.” said PM Modi in his addressing on Thursday.

PM Modi has been commended by the Bollywood celebrities, sports fraternities, netizens and citizens for his this initiative. Several TV reports show absence of people from the streets and the society, on Sunday, as Janata Curfew is strictly adhered.

Sunday, March 22, 4:18 PM: One more death has been reported from the state of Gujarat on Sunday, March 22. This is the first reported death due to COVID-19 in Gujarat. The patient was a 69-year old having Corbid condition and was in Surat hospital when he lost his breathe due to COVID-19. This has taken the total death due to COVID-19 in India to 6.

Sunday, March 22, 2:50 PM: The Government of India has announced lockdown in 75 districts while all passenger trains will also remain locked till March 31. All the inter-state buses and metro trains will remain off operational till March 31.
