‘Kabir Singh’ is a 2019 released Bollywood romantic drama film written and directed by Sandeep Vanga. It is originally a remake of the Telugu film ‘Arjun Reddy’ which was released back in the year 2017. In both the films, the lead actor plays the role of a flawed character, whose obsession towards his girlfriend lead him to the path of self-destruction.

Kabir, played by the ‘Kaminey’ star Shahid Kapoor, is portrayed as an aggressive, misogynistic, abusive and obsessive persona which is much more than normal cute love story character. The story pushes the character into a very new boyfriend image, who is madly obsessed about his girlfriend, who tempts to be womanizing and harm himself by drug addiction and alcoholism, who also emulate societies brash male toxicity.

Tapsee Pannu opened up to the media about her opinion about ‘Kabir Singh’. “Kabir Singh and Arjun Reddy are not the only films glorifying misogyny. There are several others too but not to this extent. That is one of the reasons why I do the kind of films I do, there should be a counter narrative too. I know I will never be able to match up to the numbers of this film but that won’t deter me. We are on the cusp of a change and I am not going to give up now. The problem is not showing flawed characters. The problem is when you glorify them and make what they are doing seem heroic. This character is so revered that whatever he does is not just accepted, it is celebrated.”

When Tapsee Pannu was asked whether a female Kabir Singh would be accepted by the audience? She replied “Yes, she was not a female Kabir Singh but Manmarziyaan’s Rumi Bagga was a flawed character too, and ended up losing her love and getting divorced. The same misogynist people who didn’t see a problem with Kabir, booed Rumi. We aren’t oblivious to the double standards of our society.”

Tapsee pannu quoted in her tweet, “or maybe let’s say they were madly in love with each other n this ‘act’ was to validate his TRUE love for her.” She actually quoted this on the basis of an incident which happened, in which the boyfriend smashed his girlfriend’s head for her character. This is so strange, right? Tapsee quoted this as a point to dig sarcastic view towards ‘Kabir Singh’.

But most of her fans misunderstood her sarcasm to a serious statement. She did this as her answer towards director’s (Kabir Singh) racial statement, “IF A MAN CANNOT SLAP OR KISS A WOMAN WHENEVER HE LIKES, THERE’S NO LOVE AND PASSION.” Unfortunately, the actress was trolled back since her fans were not able to point out the sarcasm in it.

She also explains the need for change in this generation. She questions back, “Are we not going to change at all about our old perceptions?”. Well, people may have forgotten this incident after the release of the trailer of the movie ‘Thappad’, but this just shows that there is a volcano of anger waiting to erupt when any misogynistic character is brandished in any movies.

Taapsee Pannu’s latest movie ‘Thappad’ which is about to release soon is all about a wife who fights for her right when her beloved husband slaps her infront of everyone in a party. This seems to be a perfect answer to this misogynistic characters which are portrayed in ‘Kabir Singh’ like movies.
