The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), on Monday, got roped into yet another controversy stoked by it’s Member of Parliament (MP) Anant Hegde for, allegedly, calling freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi’s freedom struggle a “drama”. The BJP MP from Karnataka’s Kanara Lok Sabha constituency, had, on Saturday, February 1, allegedly made several attacks on Mahatma Gandhi. “None of these so called leaders were beaten up by the cops even once. Their independence movement was one big drama. It was staged by these leaders with approval of the British. It was not a genuine fight. It was an adjustment freedom struggle,” Hegde was reported to have said this while addressing public at an event in Bengaluru, on Saturday.
The opposition leaders condemned and criticised Hegde’s remarks. Congress party leader, B K Hariprasad, came forward on Monday to condemn Hegde’s comments. He related Hegde to “sons of Nathuram Godse (assassin of Mahatma Gandhi)” as he said “Only sons of Nathuram Godse can make such comments on Mahatma Gandhi,”, ANI quoted. Trinamool Congress (TMC) also followed Congress’ tune to criticise BJP leader’s words for a great freedom fighter like Mahatma Gandhi.
“We are a supporter of Mahatma Gandhi and they (BJP) are Nathuram Godse supporters. People of this country should see how BJP MPs are, as they insult father of the nation,” said TMC leader Saugata Roy, quoted ANI.
The BJP leaders have eluded the questions related to this incident, however, sources claim that BJP high command are not happy with Hegde’s irresponsible comments. It states that BJP high-command has admonished Hegde’s comment on Gandhi and has sought unconditional apology from the former Union Minister.
