The seemingly ‘most wanted’ person at this time, the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student, Sharjeel Imam, who stoke up rage across the nation by his objectionable words of cutting-off Assam and other North East regions of India from the rest of India, is finally where he deserved to be. Sharjeel was arrested by a unit of Delhi police, on Tuesday, January 28, in Bihar’s Jehanabad. Earlier, Jehanabad police had detained one of Sharjeel’s brothers, Muzammil Imam, to create a dragnet to nab the JNU student.
Sharjeel was on a run from the police after delivering hate speech against the sovereignty of the country by calling for “cutting off Assam from the rest of India” in a public gathering. Sharjeel has been charged with charges of sedition and to create enmity among communities under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 124A, 153A and 505. Later, Sharjeel was produced in a Jehanabad court which granted his transit remand to Delhi police. The crime branch team of Delhi police is taking Sharjeel to Delhi where he will be produced in the court for further remand.
The mother of Sharjeel had earlier claimed her son to be innocent and that he will come out clean. Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh police has booked Sharjeel for his alleged hate speech in the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) campus on January 16 and is seeking his remand. Sharjeel had allegedly said objectionable words while protesting against Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019 and National Register of Citizens (NRC) on January 16, reported ANI.
A series of videos got viral on internet where Sharjeel is allegedly seen addressing a gathering and speaking against the sovereignty of the country. In his hate speech, Sharjeel could be heard sharing his impious opinion of “cutting off Assam from India”. “Create such ruckus on the railway tracks and roads that it should take around a month or more to streamline things back to normal on ground. It is our responsibility to cut-off Assam (from rest of India). They (government) will only hear us after Assam is cut-off from India,” Sharjeel had allegedly said in the video.
The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) has condemned Sharjeel’s arrest and stated that his arrest shows the “Draconian” style of BJP’s governance. “The arrest of Sharjeel is shameful and shows the brute and draconian character of the state. The BJP-RSS wants to criminalise Muslims on an unprecedented scale through witch-hunts and media trials. The arrest of JNU student Sharjeel Imam under draconian charges of sedition shows that islamophobia, selective amnesia and bias matter more than anything for the state apparatus under control of RSS-BJP. BJP and RSS want to criminalise Muslims on an unprecedented scale,” read the statement released by JNUSU.
