Alibaba patents Double-Clamshell Smartphone Design, Everything to Know

The Alibaba designed this new concept folds one way, which means the phone cannot be folded from the back panel side. Also, in the folded posture, the main display seems to be protected by a mechanism designed for screen protection. There appear two physical buttons, one for on/off purpose while the other for volume control.

We saw how the big tech giants like Samsung, Huawei and Motorola have invented the foldable smartphones. The latest news is that the e-commerce giant, Alibaba, is possibly planning to debut in the smartphone market by bringing-in the new ‘double foldable’ clamshell smartphone. Yes, a smartphone that can be folded double times to adjust in your palm. The flexible concept of this kind has attracted several eyeballs since the news broke.

In an image of Alibaba’s patent design shared on internet by Let’s Go Digital, a smartphone design has appeared with three folds. When folded completely, there appear a display of 1/3rd size of the main display, on the top which can be used for notifications, calling and other such activities. It appears at the top portion of the back panel of the smartphone. The design looks similar to that of the Motorola Razr (2019) which has the clamshell design. However, instead of one fold, here there are two folds.

It seems indigestible to believe that an e-commerce giant like Alibaba is entering the smartphone manufacturing side. Although, speculations predict that the Chinese e-commerce giant may sell the concept to another smartphone manufacturing company.
