A Sessions Judge, Satish Arora, of Patiala House Court, Delhi has issued a fresh death warrant against the four convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya Gang rape and murder case. The Public Prosecutor, Irfan Ahmad informed the court that President of India, Ramnath Kovind, has rejected the mercy plea of the convict Mukesh Sharma and the same has been informed to the concerned convict by the Tihar Jail authorities on January 17. Following which, the court issued the fresh death warrant against the four convicts, Vinay Sharma, Mukesh Singh, Pawan and Akshay. As per the death warrant, the four will be hanged till death on February 1.
The standing counsel for Tihar Jail authorities, Advocate Rahul Mehra, indicated on Wednesday, January 15 that execution of the four convicts, Vinay Sharma, Mukesh Singh, Pawan and Akshay, will not take place on January 22. Unraveling the reason for this statement, he clarified that an execution was only possible if there were no mercy plea pending with the president of India. “It can only take place 14 days after the mercy plea is rejected as we are bound by the rule which says that a notice of 14 days must be provided to the convicts after the rejection of mercy plea,” Adv. Mehra was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
On Thursday, January 16, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had alleged that the Delhi ruled Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is responsible for the delay in the hanging of the Nirbhaya Gang Rape and murder convicts. The AAP senior leader and Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia, refuted BJP’s claim and demanded control of Delhi police for 2 days from central government and then see the outcome. “Give us Delhi police and law-and-order responsibility for two days and we will hang Nirbhaya’s convicts” said Manish Sisodia, quoted ANI.
The delay in execution of the four convicts of 2012 Nirbhaya Gang Rape and Murder case, is nothing but an outcome of political tussle between the centrally ruled BJP and Delhi ruled AAP, alleged mother of the victim in the case. She said that she has never spoken about politics but recent blame game between BJP and AAP is making her resort to it. She recalled the pain she and her family had to go through to bring the convicts to justice. However, she claimed that neglecting that, the convicts are still kept away from the noose of death.
