Matrimonial Fraud Alert: MHA Issues Advisory

The official Twitter handle of the Cyber Safety and Cyber Security department of MHA, Cyber Dost, has issued advisory for those looking to find partners for marriage on matrimonial sites. In it's advisory, the Cyber Dost has given numerous precautions that need to be kept in mind while dealing with any prospective match on matrimonial sites.

The cyber safety and cyber security division of Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has taken cognisance of the cyber frauds on matrimonial sites. The official Twitter handle of the Cyber Safety and Cyber Security department of MHA, Cyber Dost, has issued advisory for those looking to find partners for marriage on matrimonial sites. In it’s advisory, the Cyber Dost has given numerous precautions that need to be kept in mind while dealing with any prospective match on matrimonial sites.

The initiative has come in view of the recent cyber frauds that have caused loss of lacs of rupees of citizens on matrimonial sites. Such is a case of a Pune based techie, a female, who lost around Rs. 10 lac to a portrayed NRI conman who posed himself as her life partner through a matrimonial site. The conman had made a fake story of sending her an expensive gift which has been held by the custom officials at Delhi airport and asked to speak to the officials. The fake officials asked her to transfer Rs. 10 lac in around 8 different accounts. She realized the fraud after the conman stopped answering and responding to her.

The other frauds that have come to light is that conmen show family emergency or medical emergency to seek funds from the victims. These fraudsters include sweet speaking men/ladies who could bluff people looking for life partners on matrimonial sites.

In the list of do’s and don’ts, Cyber Dost advised people to open their accounts on matrimonial sites with a new/fresh email ID. “Create and use new e-mail id for registering on matrimonial websites. Preferably, use e-mail as a source of communication and do not share your personal data such as; photo, phone number, residential address, etc. on matrimonial websites.” tweeted Cyber Dost. It is highly advised to keep personal and banking data confidential while dealing with unknowns on matrimonial sites.

In another advice, Cyber Dost advises us to do a thorough background checks with the office, family, friends and colleagues of the match. This will ensure the authenticity of the match and curb any such cyber frauds. “Conduct an end-to-end background check of the prospective match to avoid matrimonial frauds. Try to contact at workplace with family, friends, relatives, neighbours or associates of a prospective match to know more about him/ her.” tweeted Cyber Dost in the series of tweets.

Cyber Dost then advises citizens to keep the details of the information shared with the prospective match transparent with their family members. This will ensure the support of their family if any such matrimonial frauds take place. “To avoid matrimonial fraud, share the information about the prospective match with your family. Your family should be aware of the information shared, if any, by you with the prospective match found on matrimonial website.” tweeted Cyber Dost.

Ajanta News also would advise it’s readers to stay alert as soon as the one you have met on matrimonial/social networking sites ask for money. Do not share any personal information with unknown people claiming to be in love with you. If a situation arise where they claim to have sent you an expensive gift which has been held at an airport, ask them to call you from a official telephone/landline number of the customs department. This will ensure that the case is a genuine one and not a fake one. Such way, look for authentic ways to verify their claimed emergencies. Stay alert, stay safe!
