In an unprecedented occurrence this year, the mayor of Mumbai will be elected without any opposition from any rivals. The incumbent Shiv Sena will coronate it’s party mayor in the form of Kishori Pednekar, Sena loyalist and corporator from Lower Parel. The announcement of the new mayor will take place on November 22, where Pednekar will chair the highest post of the nation’s richest civic body. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) abstained from fielding any of it’s candidate against Sena’s mayor candidate for unknown reasons. However, BJP asserted that the Mayor of the city will be from it’s party in 2022.

The Congress party had first decided to remain out of the battlefield for the mayor election. It is speculated that the ongoing efforts of government formation in Maharashtra by Sena along with United Progressive Alliance (UPA) allies Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) be the reason for Congress’ back out from Mayor’s race. It’s ally NCP also decided to follow Congress’ footpath and not to challenge Sena’s contender for the Mayor’s position. Congress blamed it’s less corporators in the city, while NCP cited it’s strong alliance with Congress as the reason for not contending against Sena.

The Deputy Mayor position will be chaired by the Malad Sena loyalist and corporator, Suhas Wadkar. Pednekar was a nurse by profession, who entered the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) as a corporator, first in 2002. She won as a corporator in 2012 and 2017 as well. She will be the 77th Mayor of the richest and the biggest civic body of the country, that too unopposed. She will succeed over Vishwanath Mahadeshwar, the current Mayor of the city’s civic body.
