With infrastructural development taking place in Mumbai, India, the Mumbaikars are currently made to gain development in the city at the cost of sacrificing the greenery. Where on one side, Mumbaikars are happy to see the Metro connectivity, they are forced to give up the Aarey greenery on the other hand.
The lungs of Mumbai – Aarey have been declared to have been cut down to bring the Metro car shed. Despite various petitions signed to reject the proposal of chopping over 2,700 trees and protests made to stop the government from making such decisions, all the efforts from the citizens failed. Unfortunately at the end, the Bombay High Court on September 20, mentioned that Aarey cannot be declared as a forest due to it’s greenery.
The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRLC) had argued in the court that the project was of paramount importance for the city. “Every day 10 persons die due to overcrowding in local suburban trains. The Metro project will ease the pressure from the trains,” said the MMRCL counsel, Ashutosh Kumbhakoni.
On the other hand, the localites are against the favour and they are supported by the people from across the country. People have signed the petition to reject the proposal of MMRCL. The bollywood celebs too aren’t in favour of cutting of trees and showed their anger through social media.
Let’s now have a look on how our very own Bollywood reacted to this decision –
Our B-town celebs have made statements against the government’s decision to cut down the trees in Aarey. Farhan Akhtar, Siddharth Malhotra, Shraddha Kapoor, Dia Mirza, Richa Chaddha and many more celebs used their social media handles and asked Mumbaikars to wake up.
Shraddha Kapoor, a part of Save Aarey protest, came out favouring the protest against the Aarey tree cutting. Despite heavy raining in Mumbai, she came out to join the protest. She feels that being a public figure, it is her duty and responsibility to make people aware of such abruptness against the environment. The actress posted her picture from the protest mentioning that she tried her bit to save it.
Farhan Akhtar tweeted, “Cutting trees at night is a pathetic attempt at trying to get away with something even those doing it know is wrong. #Aarey #GreenIsGold #Mumbai.”

Dia Mirza , United Nation’s (UN) Goodwill ambassador also expressed her anger and tweeted against government favouring tree cutting. “400 trees have been cut in the dead of the night. As citizens sang and joined hands in unity pleading to STOP this massacre. Can’t you see they are UNITED by love!?! Love for nature. Love for our children and our future. #Aarey #ClimateAction #ActNow #ChangeIsComing.” tweeted the ‘Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein’ actress.
Despite the anger and worries of the reknowned celebs to localities, Tree Cutting Authority of BMC passed the proposal in favour of Mumbai Metro. Activists launched protest opposing the cutting of Aarey trees for metro work, Mumbai police had imposed Section 144 on Saturday near the site. With hundreds of protestors protesting against the decision near site, 29 have been reportedly arrested. Unfortunately Mumbaikars lost the lung of Mumbai – Aarey.
#AareyForest this is truly incomprehensible
1.”Mumbai high court saying “Aaray is not a forest”
2.Sooo much urgency n diligence in carrying out a court order..
3.Those responsible can’t get away with a mere tweet of fake anguish #Aarey #Mumbai #Green pic.twitter.com/nkJcGGHx87
