The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and BJP state president for West Bengal, Dilip Ghosh, made a very sensational remark against the ruling party in the state, Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Wednesday. In his allegations against the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC, he alleged that TMC is bribing people in the state to prove the “normal or accidental deaths” as suicide due to National Register of Citizens (NRC), reported ANI. “Bribe worth Rs. 2 lakhs is being given to prove that people are committing suicide because of NRC,” Ghosh was quoted as saying by ANI.
Ghosh also appealed to the people of his state to abstain from panicking due to any rumours on NRC. “There is no need for anyone to get scared..We have brought Citizenship Amendment Bill, which grants citizenship to all Indians,” he appealed to people through the news agency. The BJP state president added that TMC is creating fear among the citizens by making fake and false claims on deaths due to NRC.
As per reports, around 8 people in West Bengal have allegedly committed suicide due to fear of expulsion after NRC will be brought in the state. Recently, a 25-YO and a 50-YO man from Dhupguri & Jalpaiguri, respectively, allegedly committed suicide, reportedly, due to their failure in procuring the requisite documents for NRC. “Family members and neighbors of both the men have claimed that they were depressed over not being able to gather proper documents needed to prove their citizenship. We have started an investigation into both the cases,” said a police official from West Bengal police department, quoted News18 report.
Ghosh made the remark on the ‘bribing people with 2 lakh rupees’ in light of such cases of alleged suicide due to NRC. The NRC came into light after the process to identify the illegal immigrants living in India started in the state of Assam. The final NRC list for Assam was released by Indian government on August 31. The Union Home Minister Amit Shah has already, reportedly, expressed his wish to implement NRC across the nation.
