Five accused were arrested by the Sakinaka, Andheri East based Mumbai Police on August 21, Wednesday for allegedly gang raping a 20 year old mentally challenged woman in Sakinaka. The reports state that the five accused had taken the victim to the hillock area of Sangharsh Nagar of Chandivali on August 20, Tuesday.
The five accused have been identified as Baban Salvi, Deepak Mane, Mohammed Khan, Prathamesh Gandhi and a 17-year-old who knew the rape survivor. “The girl was taken by those five persons in the hilly area in Sangharsh Nagar where she was gang-raped and all of them are in the custody,” Senior Police Inspector, Sakinaka Police Station, Kishor Sawant exclusively told Ajanta News.
As per reports, the survivor went missing around 3 pm on the day of the gang-rape. When she didn’t return home till late evening, her parents started searching for her and finally approached the police. The police came into action and tracked the accused and booked them for wrongful restraint, gang-rape and criminal intimidation.
According to Sawant, the accused are taken in Police custody and the police will initiate the matter, produce the accused before the court and file a chargesheet against them. “We are initiating the matter, accused are produced before the court, they are remanded in the police custody, now we will collect the evidences and put up a chargesheet against them, a strong chargesheet will be put up,” assured Sr. PI Sawant to Ajanta News.
Upon asking about how grievous the victim’s injuries were, he replied, “she is well now, she was given a medical treatment, she is out of danger and she has gone to her home now.”
Ajanta News also spoke to the local Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA), Arif (Naseem) Khan, who is also a former Maharashtra state minister. Khan represents Chandivali Vidhan Sabha constituency which comprises the crime spot and has been winning the assembly election for two consecutive terms from Chandivali constituency. When Ajanta News spoke to Khan about the case, he mentioned about how he is helping the victim’s family and supporting them in this tough time. “I spoke to the senior inspector, helped them and today also the family of victim had come to meet me. We are supporting them medically and in other ways too,” mentioned the MLA.
Furthermore the MLA also expressed how wrong and bad the incident is. He also emphasized on taking strict action against the accused. “This is very bad, whatever happened was very wrong. First of all the victim is abnormal and on top of that, the way she is gang-raped, it is to be condemned to a greater extent. And strict action should be taken on the accused in this case,” appealed the elected representative of Chandivali Vidhan Sabha constituency.
While talking to Ajanta News, Naseem Khan also mentioned about the steps he is taking to handle the case. “I am monitoring the case personally. I am talking to the officers on daily basis. I am monitoring this case on a micro level. I want that a strict action should be taken on the accused in this case so that next time such incidents don’t take place in a city like Mumbai,” he roared while speaking to Ajanta News.
“I had conducted a meeting 15 days ago with the concerned police officials of Powai Police Station and Sakinaka Police Station. I have spoken to them about the complaints of the localites especially with regards to the drug addicts. I’ve spoken about the drug addicts and how their number is increasing day by day and a very strict action should be taken on them. A month ago, I had raised the issue about the drug mafia in the Assembly not only of Kadi no. 3, Sakinaka but throughout Mumbai. There should be a stringent action in place against the drug addicts and the drug suppliers. And we conducted a meeting on this issue 10 days ago about the drug addicts who gather in groups near colleges, gardens, in slums, etc. to consume the drugs, we have appealed to take strict action against them,” he added.
As per sources, 3 no. Khadi is an area in Sakinaka which is known for a number of crimes taking place on daily basis. The reports state that there are a lot of goons who harass the localites in the area. Ajanta News, thus, asked the senior police inspector Kishor Sawant about what is the department doing to curb such criminal activities in his jurisdiction. “We have been trying foot patrolling there everyday, we do it everyday in that particular area,” mentioned Sawant, in talks with Ajanta News. He also claimed that the crimes in the area have decreased now comparatively, which is a matter of investigation.
