A mass murder, reportedly, took place in Ubhbha village of Ghoraval tehsil in Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, July 17, 2019. In which, 10 people died and left twenty-four injured. The Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was detained at Chunar guest house in Mirzapur as she was not allowed to meet the victims of the incident.
The incident over a land dispute between Gujjar and Gond community in Sonbhadra district on Wednesday led to a conflict which resulted into clashes and shooting, which left 10 people dead and over twenty-four injured as the outcome of the attack.
Following the incident, the Uttar Pradesh police arrested twenty-four people in connection out of the seventy-two people against whom the case is registered.
The Superintendent of Police (SP), Salman Taj Patil said, “A total of 24 people, including the nephew of the village head, have been arrested in this case. However, the main accused – the village head – is still on run.”, as quoted in media reports. On the plea of a local named Lallu Singh, a case is also registered against Yagdutt, the village head and his brother under the Scheduled Caste and Schedule Tribe act.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra who is in charge of Eastern Uttar Pradesh decided to visit the families of the victims, however, she was detained at the Chunar Guest house in Mirzapur, by the administration of Uttar Pradesh including the Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath.
Priyanka told ANI, “Two relatives of victims who have come here to meet me, 15 others are not being allowed to meet me. Even I am not allowed to meet them.” She also informed to ANI, “My objective has been served as I have met them. I am still under detention, let’s see what the administration says. Congress party will give a compensation of Rs. 10 lakh to the kin of the person who died in the incident.”
The reason behind Priyanka’s detention was due to Section 144 imposed in the affected area. Uttar Pradesh’s Director General of Police (DGP), O P Singh said on Friday, that Priyanka and other senior leaders of the Congress Party were not allowed to visit Sonbhadra district in line with the protocol mentioned in the Section 144 as to maintain peace.
As Priyanka Gandhi Vadra continued to sit on dharma, she confirmed that she won’t leave unless she was allowed to meet the victims’ entire family. During her stay at the guest house, there was no facility of light and water provided until late night, claimed several Congress party leaders. Due to the situation, the Congress leaders claimed that power was purposely disconnected.
Priyanka questioned the attitude of the Uttar Pradesh administration. As ANI was informed by Priyanka, “Prasashan ko inki rakhwali karni chaiye. Jab inke sath hadsa ho raha tha, madad karni chaiye thi. Prasashan ki mansikta meri samaj se bahar hai (The administration should safeguard the family of victims. When the incident happened with them, they should have helped. I don’t understand the mindset of the administration).”
With the determination, Priyanka awaited to meet the victims’ family, she took her voice on Twitter. She was seen very active on her Twitter handle on Sonbhadra incident.
At the Varanasi airport, the Congress leaders Deepender Singh Hooda, Mukul Wasnik, Raj Babbar, Ratanjit Pratap Narain Singh, Jitin Prasada and Rajeev Shukla who were set to meet the victims’ family were held for the time being.
The situation at Varanasi airport made the Congress leader Pramod who met the Governor Ram Naik with a party delegation, told ANI, “The Government doesn’t want that someone should wipe off victims’ tears. Whatever has happened is unconstitutional and undemocratic and it seems as if Uttar Pradesh government has implemented undeclared emergency to hid its sins and shortcomings.”
The matter has now settled after Priyanka met the victims and decided to call off her protest against the UP government. Priyanka, while concluding her protest, recounted the demands of the victims that have to be fulfilled by the UP government.
