In yet another instance of religious extremism, a man named Tabrez Ansari was thrashed and mob lynched in Jharkhand on June 18 for refusing to chant “Jai Shri Ram” (hail the deity Ram) and “Jai Hanuman” (hail the deity Hanuman). Eventually, he died on June 22 after he succumbed to his injuries in Seraikela jail. A graphic video of the lynching was widely shared on various social media.
A Twitter user @imMAK02 (Md Asif Khan) shared a video of the incident with the caption, “One more mob lynching, Jharkhand. Tabrez Ansari aka Sonu was brutally thrashed by a mob in suspicion of theft. When he told his name to the mob, then mob beat him up brutally. Yesterday he died … Welcome to … Hindu Rashtra 2.0.”

In the video, Ansari was seen sitting on the ground, surrounded by a mob, as a man thrashed him with a stick and other heavy objects. Ansari could be seen screaming with pain and helplessness for every assault on him.
Another video was uploaded by the same user where Ansari is seen with his hands behind his back, seemed his hands were tied around the poll and he was being forced to say “Jai Shri Ram” and “Jai Hanuman”. The video also shows Ansari uttering ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and ‘Jai Hanuman’ out of fear.
When Mob came to know that he is Muslim, they forced him to shout Jai Sri Ram and Jai Hanuman and thrashed him brutally.

According to the reports, Ansari was allegedly accused of theft and was arrested by villagers in Dhatkidih, Jamshedpur in Jharkhand on June 18. However, it was later discovered that Tabrez Ansari worked in Pune as a welder & a labourer, and had come to his village in Jharkhand’s Kharsawan district to celebrate Eid with his family. Ansari fell unconscious while he was in the jail on June 22 and consequently died on the same day.
Recently, a Madrasa teacher named Mohammed Momin was attacked in Delhi for allegedly not pronouncing “Jai Shri Ram” (Hail the deity Ram) on June 20, Thursday. He was allegedly hit by a car in Rohini Sector 20 of Delhi when the travellers in the car asked him to chant “Jai Shri Ram” and he refused to do the same. Upon refusing to follow the instructions of the people sitting in the car, he was abused verbally and hit by the car.
“Some people sitting inside the car asked me to say ‘Jai Shri Ram’ but I avoided them. They then verbally abused me & hit me with the car which has caused these injuries,” ANI news agency quoted Momin as saying.
Momin filed a complaint with the police on the next day of the incident and the police is probing the incident now. SD Mishra, Deputy Commissioner of Police of Rohini area said, “We have registered an FIR of accident. However, Mohammad Momin has claimed that three boys who were in a white car had asked him to say some religious word, when he refused, they hit him. Now we are verifying this allegation. CCTV footage will be examined.”
It won’t be shocking for the people to hear or read the above mentioned incidents because these were not the only incidents which took place in India. There are n-number of incidents which have happened very recently where the victims were similarly mob lynched on the grounds of religious unrest.
In another similar incidence, a 25 year old Muslim man named Mohammed Barkat was beaten by a group of about half a dozen men at Jacubpura in Gurugram on the night of May 25 after he was demanded to remove his skullcap and chant Jai Shri Ram.
He was returning to his shop around 10 pm after offering his prayers at Jama Masjid in Gurugram when he allegedly encountered the mob. “One of the men called me with an offensive word and told me that skullcap was not allowed in this area. When I told him that I was returning from a mosque, he slapped me. He also asked me to chant Bharat Mata Ki Jai and Jai Shri Ram. When I refused, he threatened to feed me pork,” Barkat said, quoted media reports. Barkat claimed that the man allegedly picked up a stick and hit him and also abused him.
When Barkat tried to push the man and run away, the man allegedly tore his shirt. As he started crying, the men left. Four of them drove away in a motorcycle and two just walked away into one of the alleys in the area. He was then taken to the civil hospital by his cousin.
In another incident, a Muslim youth named Mohammed Qasim was told to go to Pakistan and shot at in Begusarai district of Bihar. Qasim, who was being treated at a hospital in Begusarai, said that he knew his attacker.
“I was at Kumbi (village) in front of a paan shop. A man named Rajiv Yadav shot me. He asked my name. I said, ‘Mohammad Qasim’. He abused me, called me a miyan (Muslim), asked what I was doing here when I should be in Pakistan, and shot me in the back. He was completely drunk,” Qasim said in a video clip that seems to have been filmed in the hospital.
The trouble makers didn’t spare Muslim girls as well. A 23-year-old hijab-clad student of a medical college in north Bengal was allegedly threatened and intimidated by a group of 10-12 men allegedly chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’ inside the institution campus on Saturday. The matter is under investigation.
“I along with a friend around 10 PM were returning from the canteen after dinner when we saw a group of 10-12 men standing on the road. We were walking on our own but after noticing my attire they started shouting ‘Jai Shree Ram’ while pointing fingers at us. Later they started thumping their feet to intimidate us. We immediately ran away to save ourselves,” the final-year medical student was quoted as saying by several sections of media. The girl later filed a First Information Report (FIR) with the local police.
It will be completely unjust to blame any religion for these incidents, however, it is necessary to get hold of such anti social elements contriving such crimes. Assaulting anyone on the ground of religion is shameful for the country like India which is known for it’s “unity in diversity”. These incidents need thorough and unbiased investigation to reveal the hands behind such crimes. It’s not just Muslims becoming victims of extremism but there are incidents of Hindus and other religion followers of facing such hooliganism in the name of religion.
