Omar Abdullah Vs Amit Shah, delimitation of assembly constituencies,

The Union home ministry of India seems to have given a massive jolt to the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) after appointing the former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president, Amit Shah, as the Union Home Minister. Just three days of his appointment, Shah has started meeting the essential and important bodies of the state to diagnose the root cause of terrorism. The speculations hint that Amit Shah has given clear instructions to the security forces in the state to deal with terrorism with no mercy and adopt “Zero Tolerance” towards it.

Amid these speculations, the news of delimitation of assembly constituencies in the state is at peak. As per reliable sources, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is mulling over constituting a delimitation commission to study the current assembly constituencies in J&K and table it’s recommendations.

Reacting to this news, the JKNC chief, Omar Abdullah, advocated for his resistance to this “change” as the same is not done in the rest of the country. “When delimitation takes place in the rest of the country the BJP is welcome to apply it to J&K until then we in the @JKNC_ will oppose, tooth & nail, any attempt to make changes without a mandate from the people of the state.” tweeted Abdullah on Tuesday.

Abdullah further questioned BJP’s stand on providing J&K equality by treating the state differently on the delimitation of assembly constituencies in the state. “It’s rather surprising that the BJP, which talks about bringing J&K at par with other states by removing 370 & 35-A now wants to treat J&K differently from other states in this one respect.” questioned Abdullah through his series of tweets.

On contrary, the J&K activist, Sushil Pandit, opposed the views of Omar Abdullah and welcomed the MHA’s contemplation over delimitation of assembly constituencies in the state. “It is a correct decision. There are around 65,000 people in every assembly constituency in Jammu, while Kashmir has only 42,000-43,000 people. Based on this, there should be more assembly seats in Jammu. Also, there should be more seats in Leh & Ladakh,” said Pandit while talking on the issue with news agency ANI.

Pandit recalled the amendment brought by the 2002 ruling party, JKNC, led by Farooq Abdullah who’s government froze the delimitation of assembly constituencies till 2026. Pandit requested to decrease the assembly constituencies in the Kashmir valley while increasing the seats in Jammu. He also requested to postpone the state assembly election but complete the delimitation work on priority.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has given it’s nod for assembly election in the state after the Amarnath Yatra gets over. The Amarnath Yatra is scheduled between July 1 – August 15, 2019. So possibly, the election in the state may be held post August and before the year ends.
