A video went viral a day ago which shows a man hitting and kicking a woman who seems already been fallen down on the road due to the assault. Upon investigating, it was discovered that the incident took place on June 2, Sunday when a woman along with a group of protesters, were protesting for demanding restoration of water connection in the area near Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Balram Thawani’s office in Naroda, Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
BJP MLA Balram Thawani is accused of allegedly brutally thrashing the woman near his office. This shocking incident was caught on camera and the video quickly went viral on social media.
After facing a massive criticism over the issue, the BJP MLA made an apology on June 3, Monday. Balram Thawani has been quoted in reports as saying that he had hit out “in self-defence”, that he was attacked in his office first. The woman, he said in those report, was hurt by accident. He has now apologized, according to the news agency ANI.
“I got swayed by emotions, I accept the mistake, it was not intentional. I have been in politics for last 22 years, such a thing has never happened before. I will say sorry to her,” Thawani told ANI.
According to reports, the victim who was allegedly assaulted by the BJP MLA was a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) supporter, Nitu Tejwani.
In the viral video, Thawani can be seen kicking and thrashing Tejwani (as mentioned above) who, according to the reports, was already under attack by another man. Later, Tejwani had filed a complaint against Thawani.
“I went to meet Balram to discuss the lack of proper water in the area. Without saying anything, he (Balram) came and started slapping and thrashing me. When my husband saw this, he came to my rescue. Immediately, some of Balram’s supporters came from inside and started thrashing my husband with sticks. Women who were protesting along with me were also brutally beaten up by Balram and his supporters,” quoted news agency ANI.
However, the Congress had demanded an apology from the state’s ruling BJP. “The video which surfaced is very painful and should be condemned in strictest terms. Women need to be protected from the leaders of BJP. BJP should take strict action against this MLA. The Chief Minister as the leader should apologise,” said Rajeev Satav, the Congress party’s Gujarat-In-Charge.
While, MLA Thawani told Times Now news channel that he would not apologise over the incident as the woman “was at fault” and alleged that her husband had hit him first inside his office.
The MLA on Sunday evening reached the Meghaninagar police station where he said that the Sindhi community was attempting to broker peace between the two sides. He also alleged that he had been hit by a person in his office, following which he decided to retaliate.
Later, Thawani claimed that he might have “accidentally” hit the woman.
Meanwhile, PI PG Sarvaiya, ‘G’ Division ACP MP Desai and Zone IV SCP Neerajkumar Badgujur were all present at the police station when the MLA went there late at night to sort out the matter.
However, later on Monday, the TV channels showed the duo sitting next to each other amicably, with Tejwani tying rakhi to the MLA. “She’s like my sister. I have apologised to her for what happened yesterday. We have cleared the misunderstandings between us and I have promised to be there if she ever needs any help,” Thawani told the media.
