1. Dosa – A thin flat layer of fermented rice batter

Dosa is one of the famous and common dishes found in Indian as well as foreign restaurants, street shops & fast food centres. It is high in carbohydrates as it does not contain any added sugar or saturated fats. Additionally, it’s ingredients like rice and black gram provide protein to body. The fermentation process of dosa batter increases the content of Vitamin B and Vitamin C. That’s the benefit of South Indian foods, it not only provides taste but also offer some good health benefits to us.

2. Idlis – Soft, savoury rice cake

Idlis are a perfect breakfast dish. These idlis are made by steaming a fermented batter of rice and black lentils. Starch present in it breaks down which helps the body in it’s metabolism. It can be served hot with sambar or chutney as per taste.

3. Coconut Rice

This dish is prepared by soaking rice (white rice) in coconut milk or by using coconut flakes. Coconut rice is quite different from all the other south Indian dishes as it is sweet and not spicy. Also, Coconut rice are available in veg and non veg variety, which means vegetarians can have it as it is, while the non vegetarians can enjoy it with chicken, veggies, beef or some sea food.

4. Sambar Rice

Sambar is a lentil based vegetable stew. Sambar can be consumed along with dosa, idli or rice as per one’s preference. Vada Sambar or Idli Sambar are two main dishes eaten in breakfast or evening snack. Sambar also have many health benefits which include – good source of protein as it is made of pulses, the variety of vegetables used to make sambar make it rich in fibres which make it easy to digest.

5. Uttapam

Uttapam is a sort of thick pancake with some toppings on it. Rice flour and Urad dal are the main ingredients of Uttapam, the topping are usually capsicum, onion and tomatoes. It tastes good and is easily digestible, majorly consumed in breakfast.

6. Rawa Upma

A porridge cooked from dry semolina along with seasoning of vegetables as per the person’s preference. The basic method of cooking Upma is roasting dry semolina and then mixing it with salt, and water. Vegetables are added as per the choice and taste.

7. Curd Rice

Curd rice or yoghurt rice are most common food items preferred in south India. These rice are usually consumed along with pickle, mango or lime. Along with a good taste, curd rice also helps in digestion, aids in weight loss, cools the body temperature and boosts immunity.
