Praveen Pardeshi is appointed as the new Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner on Monday. Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, had declared Pardeshi as the BMC Chief on May 10, Friday and today, i.e. May 13, Monday, was his first day in the BMC Commissioner’s Office.
57 year old Pardeshi, who is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of 1985 batch was previously serving as the Additional Chief Secretary in Chief Minister’s office. Meanwhile, Ajoy Mehta, whom Pardeshi has replaced, is appointed as the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra as UPS Madan, the predecessor of Ajoy Mehta, who took the voluntary retirement and has been named as special advisor to the CM. Mehta has completed his four years as the BMC Chief.
“We will make all possible efforts to further improve the administration. My predecessor has drawn up several new schemes and projects. Our effort will continue with these projects and bring in new projects to improve the quality of life,” said the newly appointed BMC Commissioner while giving an interview to a news organization.
He also mentioned of completing the major infrastructure projects which are in progress. The newly appointed civic chief has emphasized more on the improvement of public transport system in Mumbai. The Commissioner also shed light on improvement of cleanliness and environment in Mumbai and he also showed keen interest on providing better healthcare at affordable cost to the citizens.
Pardeshi has been an important member of CM Fadnavis’s core team from the time CM came to power in 2014. He played an important role in coordinating the state’s relief efforts to Kerala during floods last year.
The newly appointed BMC Chief has worked at several posts with the state government of Maharashtra. He has held departments including the Revenue and Forest in the past and was among the front-runners for the post of civic chief. Pardeshi holds a Master’s degree in Social and Economic policy.
There were several others who were contenders for the BMC Commissioner’s post and they were Rajeev Jalota, Sales Tax Commissioner; Manu Kumar Srivastava, additional chief secretary, Revenue; and RA Rajeev, MMRDA commissioner. However, Fadnavis finalised on Pardeshi late Friday evening.
Ajoy Mehta’s tenure as the civic chief was marked by several noteworthy developments (finalisation of Development Plan 2034, launch of the Coastal Road project among others) and scams (road development scam, FOB collapse near CSMT).
Ajanta News got in touch with the BMC Deputy Public Relations Officer (PRO) Tanaji Kamble, however, he denied to answer any of our questions which were crucial from the Mumbaikars point of view.
