A horrific incident that shook the nation took place in Rajasthan’s Alwar on April 26. A dalit woman was allegedly gang raped by five men in front of her husband when she was out for shopping with him. The incident took place at around 3pm when the couple was going to Talvriksha from village, Lalwadi, on a motorcycle.
The men stopped the couple on Thanagazi-Alwar bypass. They were dragged to an isolated area in sand dunes, where the woman was raped turn by turn and her husband was threatened of dire consequences if reported the incidents to anyone.
Victim’s husband’s brother spoke to media and narrated the horrific ordeal of his brother and sister-in-law. “My brother works in Jaipur and his wife stays at her parent’s place near Thanagazi. On April 26, they went shopping in Alwar. They were on their bike when five men on two motorcycles started following them on a deserted stretch of the road. They forced my brother to stop. They then dumped the couple’s bike in a ditch and dragged them to the sand dunes off the road. ” he told TOI while recalling the shameful incident that has astonished his whole family.
“The five beat up my brother with sticks and hit his wife. She tried to resist. But the more she resisted, the more they beat them up. Out of desperation to save her husband, she surrendered. They took turns raping her and it continued for close to three hours. The assailants robbed the couple of Rs. 2,000 too,” he said.
He further narrated how his brother and sister-in-law returned home after facing the trauma of 3 hours. “My sister-in-law had to push the bike while my brother steered it to get it out of the ditch. This was after three hours of torture. They took three days to tell us about what they went through. Both of them are traumatized.” he added.
The accused not only raped the victim but also thrashed the couple, took off their clothes and filmed the act. They also threatened to make the 11 recorded videos viral if the couple fails to give the cash. Unfortunately, one of the videos was essentially uploaded on social media that has gone viral on May 6.
The couple, at last, filed a First Information Report (FIR) on May 2 under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Scheduled Caste/
Scheduled Tribe Act against the five accused.
The cops, however, managed to arrest 3 of the 5 accused. The names of the arrested accused were revealed to be Ashok Gujjar, Mukesh Gujjar and Inderaj Gujjar. Two others are still absconding.
According to the police, Mukesh Gujjar is responsible for spreading the video of the gangrape on social media.
Moreover, the incident took a political turn in the state of Rajasthan, condemning the Congress government over poor law and order situation in the state. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot’s resignation due to the shameful act in his ruled state.
Ashok Gehlot, however, refuted the accusations against him and his government, and assured of strict action against the perpetrators. “The state government is committed for women safety. Nearly a dozen police teams have been formed to arrest the accused and one arrest has been made. The victim and her family are given protection.” assured Gehlot while speaking to reporters.
