Pakistan based terrorist group Jaish–e-Mohammed (JeM) chief, Masood Azhar, was declared as a “Global Terrorist” by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on May 1. Akbaruddin, while expressing gratitude towards the member countries for their support, tweeted, “Big,small, all join together. Masood Azhar designated as a terrorist in @UN Sanctions list Grateful to all for their support. #Zerotolerance4Terrorism.”

With the news of Masood Azhar being listed as a global terrorist, there were different reactions coming in from the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) leaders/National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition.

National Spokesperson of BJP, GVL Narasimha Rao, while retweeting Syed Akbaruddin’s tweet, acknowledged the victory of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and praised him for winning the “global war”. “Big victory for Hon’ble PM @narendramodi Ji in the battle against Pak-sponsored terrorism. Yet another evidence of how PM Modi has spearheaded the Global war on terror over the past five years. A diplomatic surgical strike against the perpetrator of Pulwama attack!!” tweeted Rao.

The National Spokesperson for BJP, Sambit Patra, also tweeted thanking PM Modi and termed this victory as PM Modi’s win. He said that all the credits go to PM Modi for drafting a Foreign Policy which worked as a catalyst in declaring Masood Azhar as a global terrorist. “Thanks to PM Shri @narendramodi Ji It was His deftly crafted Foreign policy which got #MasoodAzhar declared as international terrorist by UN Big victory for India indeed #मोदिहैतोमुमकीनहै,” wrote Sambit Patra retweeting Syed Akbaruddin’s tweet.

Union Minister for Finance, Arun Jaitley also set his thoughts in motion by praising PM Modi for his robust foreign diplomacy. “India stands vindicated. Masood Azhar is now a global terrorist. India is in safe hands. This marks a high point for the Prime Minister’s foreign policy,” tweeted Jailtey.

BJP has also used this news as a tool for campaigning for the on-going general elections. It has posted an image on it’s official twitter handle which says, “India has got a historic victory against terrorism. Masood Azhar has been declared as Global Terrorist in United Nations Security Council. The culprit behind Pulwama Terrorist attack is Jaish –e – Mohammed Chief Masood Azhar.”

On the other hand, the opposition has different views about the victory. All of them have happily welcomed the victory, though, some leaders are questioning that why UN didn’t mention Pulwama attack in the list of Masood Azhar’s terrorist activities. While the other leaders are giving credits to the Congress party who, according to them, began this episode of demanding Masood Azhar to be designated as the international terrorist.

“Is this true that the listing of #MasoodAzhar as a global terrorist was only possible because all references to Pulwama & terrorism in Kashmir were dropped?” tweeted the former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah.

Communications In–charge for Congress Party, Randeep Singh Surjewala, has also expressed his disappointment regarding no mention of Pulwama Attack in the list of Azhar’s role in terrorist activities. “Pakistan based #MasoodAzhar’s belated declaration as a global terrorist by UN is surely a welcome step. India’s fight against terrorism is resolute. We are disappointed that UN listing doesn’t mention Pulwama/J&K while listing Azhar’s role in terrorist activities,” tweeted Randeep Singh Surjewala.

Congress leader P. Chidambaram wrote in a thread of tweets, where he has blamed BJP for Azhar’s release in the year 1999. He mentioned that the Congress had began the demand for Azhar’s declaration as gobal terrorist. Notably, he has also raised a question in his tweet about why the PM of Pakistan wants PM Modi to continue to be the Prime Minister of India in the next tenure as well.

“Masood Azhar was released in 1999 by a BJP government after the hijack of the Indian Airlines aircraft. After Masood Azhar masterminded the Mumbai terror attack in 2008, the process to name him as a global terrorist was started by a Congress/UPA government in 2009. We are happy that the process has concluded successfully in 2019. But why does the Prime Minister of Pakistan want Mr Modi to continue as Prime Minister of India?” tweeted Chidambaram.

National Spokesperson for Congress, Sanjay Jha, also expressed his views in line with other Congress leaders. “#MasoodAzhar being branded a global terrorist is good news. Caution: #HafizSaeed is also in the same global terrorist category for years. He ALSO has a USD 10 million bounty on his head by the US. Hafiz Saeed contested the recent general elections in Pakistan.” tweeted Jha.

Masood Azhar was declared as the international terrorist after China lifted it’s hold on the proposal of blacklisting him. The proposal was already moved by the other permanent members of UNSC which are France, the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States of America (US). It was only China among all the five permanent UNSC members who had blocked the proposal till now.

The proposal to declare Azhar as an international terrorist was taken by the UNSC 1267 Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee, nearly three months after the JeM carried out a ghastly terror attack on Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) convoy in Pulwama district of Kashmir.
