Pragya Singh Thakur or Sadhvi Pragya is contesting elections in the on-going Lok Sabha Polls from Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal constituency against the Congress candidate, Digvijay Singh. Sadhvi Pragya is an accused in 2008 Malegaon terrorist bombings and she is out on bail, following the dropping of charges under Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA) section by the special National Investigation Agency (NIA).
On one hand where there is chaos across the country about Sadhvi Pragya’s candidature, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is defending it’s decision to give her the ticket to the Lok Sabha seat. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi came in rescue of the right wing leader, Sadhvi Pragya, and made a sharp attack on opposition by referring to Samjhauta Express blast verdict. He also said that Congress party tried to defame a “5,000-old culture that believes in Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam”. “A civilisation, a tradition that has promoted the idea of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (the world is one family) for the last 5,000 years was branded as terrorists by some.” PM Modi was quoted as saying in media reports.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a very recent interview given to Times Now news channel also said that Pragya Thakur’s candidature is a symbol to answer all those who degraded a great civilisation and one that will prove costly to the Congress party. “Sadhvi Pragya’s candidature from Bhopal is a symbol to answer all those who did this and this symbol will prove costly to the Congress,” said PM Modi.
Several BJP leaders have criticized the Congress, claiming that the party had floated the theory of “Hindu terror” in the Samjhauta Express blast case. Recently, Arun Jaitley had said the term “Hindu terror” was coined to give a bad name to the “otherwise liberal majority community in India”.
BJP’s National President, Amit Shah, has also defended Sadhvi Pragya’s candidature at a press conference in Kolkata, West Bengal. “It is absolutely a right decision. The allegations against her are baseless. Nothing against her or Swami Aseemanand have been proved,” roared Amit Shah in the largely attended rally.
Meanwhile, Pragya Thakur is confident of winning the seat from Bhopal against Digvijay Singh and she has warned all those who are referring to “Saffron Terror” and has promised to “restore dignity” of Saffron.
The former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, has hit out on Sadhvi Pragya questioning the reason on which she is out on bail. She was granted bail on health grounds and yet she is healthy enough to fight elections, says Omar Abdullah. “What a mockery of the legal system the BJP has made with its candidate for Indore! A person, an under-trial, who stands accused of terrorism; out on bail on health grounds but clearly healthy enough to fight elections in the crippling summer heat. Hindutva rules!” tweets Abdullah.

Tehseen Poonawala, a petitioner, however, has filed a petition in the Election Commission of India against Sadhvi Pragya’s Candidature, claiming that she won’t let Sadhvi Pragya fight the elections. “So #SadhviPragya ji has filed her nomination for the #LokSabhaElections2019 from Bhopal. I am the petitioner in the Election Commission of India & I have something coming up in the next 2 days. Watch this space. She will not fight!!” claims Poonawala.
Pragya Singh Thakur, who joined the BJP earlier this week, is facing charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and other sections of the Indian Penal Code in connection with 2008 Malegaon blasts, in which six people died and about 100 were injured. The Bombay High Court had granted bail to her in April 2017, noting that she had been in jail for nine years and was suffering from breast cancer.
Ever since the news of Pragya Singh’s candidature has come up, the mainstream media is constantly covering all the stories coming up related to Sadhvi Pragya. There are few who are supporting and defending her candidature, while there are few who are against her candidature. The petitioner and others are keeping a close watch for the next twist that will make an impact.
