Income Tax Sleuths in High Action in Karnataka, Congress Party Chief in the State Escalates it to President Kovind

Congress party and JD(S) leaders took to twitter to hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) alleging that they are playing a ‘Revenge Game’ and misusing the government machinery. On Thursday, the alliance government of Congress party and JD(S) staged protest led by Chief Minister, HD Kumaraswamy, against I-T department and BJP.

Income tax department conducted a series of search operations in over 20 places in Bengaluru, Ramanagara, Kankapura, Shivamogga, Mandya, Mysuru and Hassan with security provided by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The search operations just ahead of general poll 2019 targeting Congress party and Janta Dal (Secular) (JD(S)) leaders has heated up the political environment in Karnataka.

On Thursday, the alliance government of Congress party and JD(S) staged protest led by Chief Minister, HD Kumaraswamy, against I-T department and BJP.

The matter was even escalated to the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, on Saturday. Dinesh Gundu Rao, Congress chief in Karnataka, wrote a letter to President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday seeking his intervention in the ongoing Income Tax raids against the JD(S) and Congress party leaders.

“We request you to direct the Income Tax department to desist from conducting raids in Karnataka in order to conduct free and fair election,” Rao said in the letter.

“The ruling party at the centre led by PM Narendra Modi is misusing power by directing I-T department of Karnataka and Goa circle to conduct raid and the officers integrity is doubtful. Their action justifies that they are agent of BJP.” he wrote in the letter.

Targeting Modi, Rao wrote, “In the month of February 2018, the union government directed the Income Tax Department to conduct raids on Ministers, Ex-Ministers, MLAs belonging to Indian National Congress and it’s Candidates, supporters and workers and it continued till when the elections was in full swing till May 2018 in an attempt to affect the election prospects of Indian National Congress Candidates.”

He also added that during Karnataka Legislative Assembly, Income tax department raided the residence of Congress candidate Bhimanna Naik, following which he was confined to his home for three days and was not able to campaign. Several complaints were lodged to Election commission but no action were taken or initiated. He also alleged that BJP chief, Amit Shah, is trying to destabilise the government by offering allurements to MLAs.

The income tax department has seized 1.66 crore cash in the raid carried out throughout Karnataka, the IT officials told reliable sources. “Certain searches are being carried out by the income tax department in Karnataka, Goa on contractors and connected persons. No MP, MLA or Minister have so far been covered in search operations and these searches are been carried out on the basis of credible information received by Income Tax department” read the statement released by the Income Tax department.
