ISRO and DRDO jointly make India an “Elite Space Power”, PM Modi and Nation Overwhelmed with Proud; Opposition Parties Target PM Modi

PM Narendra Modi finally addressed the nation at around 12:20 pm after making the impatient and restless crowd wait for almost 35 mins. While making the announcement, he said that India has registered itself as an elite space power by carrying out an Anti-Satellite (A-SAT) test. India has successfully targeted and shot down a live satellite on Low Earth Orbit (LEO) by using it's indigenous anti- satellite missile A-SAT. The Mission was named as ‘Mission Shakti’.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a big announcement on Wednesday. He first tweeted on his official twitter handle at around 10:53 am that he would be making an important announcement and told people to watch it. “I would be addressing the nation at around 11:45 AM – 12.00 noon with an important message. Do watch the address on television, radio or social media.” tweeted PM Modi.

This created a huge chaos among the netizens, media and the people across the country. The message left everyone with different speculations in their mind. The news anchors ran out of words because no one had any clue about what the Prime Minister would come up with, this time. It reminded people of November 8, 2016, when PM Modi in a very similar manner had announced the imposition of Demonetization.

Mission Shakti was a joint programme of the Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). During this mission, India targeted it’s own decommissioned satellite and shot it down within 3 minutes of the launch of the A-SAT weapon, which was launched at 11:16 am. PM Modi also informed the nation that India has established itself as a space power and it stands as the fourth country to acquire this capability after United States, Russia and China.

PM Modi congratulated the DRDO, scientists and other officials who were a part of the mission. He also congratulated the citizens of India for this great achievement. “In the journey of every nation there are moments that bring utmost pride and have a historic impact on generations to come. One such moment is today. India has successfully tested the Anti-Satellite (ASAT) Missile. Congratulations to everyone on the success of #MissionShakti”, he tweeted just after he made the announcement.

He also said that the mission was highly complex, “#MissionShakti was a highly complex one, conducted at extremely high speed with remarkable precision. It shows the remarkable dexterity of India’s outstanding scientists and the success of our space programme.”

In his 10 min long message, he also articulated that the mission was not against any country, it was purely India’s defense initiative for it’s security. He also said that India is against arms race in the space. He assured that the mission has not violated any international laws or treaties. “We want to work only for the security of India’s 130 Cr population and their welfare. Our aim is to maintain peace and not to create an environment of war,” he added.

“#MissionShakti is special for 2 reasons: (1) India is only the 4th country to acquire such a specialised & modern capability. (2) Entire effort is indigenous. India stands tall as a space power! It will make India stronger, even more secure and will further peace and harmony,” PM Modi tweeted.

While addressing the whole nation, PM Modi emphasized that the Mission Shakti is for the security of the nation and it’s technical advancement. “Mission Shakti’s objective is India’s security, economic development, and India’s technical advancement. Mission shakti was important for these three factors.”, PM Modi said in his message.

While at one hand, PM Modi was getting praised by the leaders and other legends; he was also blamed by the opposition for distracting and diverting the voters just two weeks ahead of the starting date of elections.

Congress party chief, Rahul Gandhi, also congratulated DRDO and took away all the credits from PM Modi and his officials, involved in the mission, by not congratulated them. He rather chose to wish PM Modi for the World Theatre Day. “Well done DRDO, extremely proud of your work. I would also like to wish the PM a very happy World Theatre Day.” tweeted Gandhi post the announcement of India’s success in the Space.

“India’s Mission Programme is world-class for many many years. We are always proud of our scientists, @DRDO_India , other research & space organisations. Today’s announcement is yet another limitless drama and publicity mongering by Modi desperately trying to reap political benefits at the time of election. This is a gross violation of Model Code of Conduct.” All India Trinamool Congress Chief, Mamata Banerjee, blamed PM Modi for violating the Code of Conduct. She has also mentioned in her next tweet that she is lodging a complaint with the Election Commission about this.

The Congress party from it’s official twitter handle also tweeted giving credits to the first Prime Minister of India, Pt. Meanwhile, Former President Pranab Mukherjee, Kiran Bedi, Singer Lata Mangeshkar, Cricketer Shikhar Dhawan, Athlete Deepa Malik, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, etc. praised and congratulated PM Modi for the success.
