The 63 year old chief minister of Goa and former Defence Minister of India, Manohar Parrikar, who was suffering from pancreatic cancer for over a year died at his private residence in Panji on March 17, 2019. “We inform with deep grief that our beloved Chief Minister of Goa Shri. Manohar Parrikar passed away today evening, after a spirited battle against cancer,” informed Goa Chief Minister office through a tweet on Sunday.

A while later, Honourable President of India tweeted to express his condolence on the demise of four time chief minister of Goa. He wrote, “Extremely sorry to hear of the passing of Shri Manohar Parrikar, Chief Minister of Goa, after an illness borne with fortitude and dignity. An epitome of integrity and dedication in public life, his service to the people of Goa and of India will not be forgotten.”
He was diagnosed with advanced Pancreatic cancer in February 2018, after which he was admitted in Goa Medical College. The next day, he was taken to Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai and later he was taken for treatment in New York for few days.
Manohar Parrikar was born in Mapusa, Goa and completed his secondary education in Marathi. Graduated as metallurgical engineer from IIT (Bombay) in 1978, he became the first IIT alumnus to serve as Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) of an Indian State.
In January 2019, a frail Parrikar presented the Goa Budget, with a tube in his nose. He also inaugurated the Atal Setu bridge in Goa in the same month, where he drew a huge round of applause after he said “How’s the josh”, soon after the release of the Bollywood movie ‘Uri: The Surgical Strike’.
With his simple lifestyle and down-to-earth nature, he has won hearts of millions. After his death was announced this evening, people around every corner of the country expressed their grief condolences over his sad departure.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to twitter to pay tribute to this powerful leader. “Shri Manohar Parrikar was an unparalleled leader. A true patriot and exceptional administrator, he was admired by all. His impeccable service to the nation will be remembered by generations. Deeply saddened by his demise. Condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti.” wrote PM Modi on his Twitter handle.
Union minister Smriti Irani also wrote on Twitter to express her condolences. “Manohar Parrikar leaves behind many admirers, many who looked upon him as an idol. My condolences to his loved ones, colleagues & supporters.” tweeted Union Minister, Smriti Irani on Sunday.
“I am deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Goa CM, Shri Manohar Parrikar Ji, who bravely battled a debilitating illness for over a year. Respected and admired across party lines, he was one of Goa’s favourite sons. My condolences to his family in this time of grief,” tweeted Congress President Rahul Gandhi after the news flashed confirming the death of the ex-Defence Minister who he had recently, allegedly, shared a controversial conversation on Rafale deal.
Arvind Kejriwal, the Delhi chief minister, also took to his twitter handle to express his heartfelt condolence as he wrote, ”Extremely saddened at the news of passing away of Goa CM Shri Manohar Parrikar ji. A symbol of simplicity in politics who led a humble life is no longer with us. May his family bear the irreparable loss with courage. Prayers with them.”
A condolence meeting will be kept at Union cabinet at 11 am on Monday. The mortal remains of Goa CM will be kept at Goa’s BJP head office between 9.30am to 10.30am. It will then be kept at Kala Academy, Panjim between 11am to 4pm there. His last journey will begin from Kala Academy, Panjim and his funeral will be held at Miramar at 5pm on Monday. He will be given state honour while his funeral procession carries on, Goa government announced. The BJP-led central government of India has announced national mourning on Monday, on the death of the four time chief minister of Goa and a BJP loyalist.
Announcement of new Chief Minister will be shortly announced later by the Bhartiya Janta Party.
