It seems the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Mumbai’s suburbs has rolled up it’s sleeves to take on the rogue auto drivers on the streets of Mumbai who refuse to go to the passengers’ desired destiny because of low distance journey. The organisation has brace up it’s will to take on the rude, unruly and rogue auto rickshaw drivers who humiliate, insult, inappropriately behave and even assault passengers, while denying them to ply on their vehicles for their vested interests.
If a report by TOI is to be believed, RTO has confiscated around 337 licenses of auto rickshaw drivers and has sent them for permanent cancellation after checking around 709 licenses. The RTO has monitored these rogue auto drivers in the last 10 days and has pulled back their licenses for their outrageous and unacceptable behaviour with the passengers.
The step is seen as a corrective action from the RTO in order to bring relief to the affected passengers. The suburban RTOs carried out a drive to catch these habitual offenders who refuse to ply passengers in their auto or do not respect the importance of passengers. The RTOs found around 863 auto drivers without badge and license during the drive, while 70 auto drivers overloading passengers and 15 drivers had charged the passengers excess fare. The RTOs checked the licenses of such unruly auto drivers and has sent around 337 out of them for permanent cancellation.
Notably, auto rickshaw drivers on the streets of suburban area, especially, Andheri and Borivali, either refuse to abide by the rules laid down by the RTOs or refuse to ply passengers for short distance journey. Now, RTO will take immediate action of cancellation if the auto rickshaw drivers are seen misbehaving or disrespecting or humiliating women or senior citizens, or manhandle them. In case of repeat offenders, the RTO would cancel their license permanently.
The State Transport Commissioner, Shekhar Channel, spoke on the issue and said that the objective of the action is to curb menace of auto rickshaw drivers towards passengers. He also clarified that before taking any action against the accused auto rickshaw driver, a thorough inquiry will be conducted followed by the process of hearing the accused and considering the version given by the passengers too.
