The semi-nude protest of farmers from Satara district of Maharashtra to Mantralaya was stopped by police force at Mankhurd which is the border of Mumbai. 100 of farmers from 10 villages of Khandala tehsil from Satara district began their march on January 12 which came to halt on Sunday morning after police force intervened. Farmers who were marching towards the administrative headquarters of the state were, reportedly, asked to visit Mantralaya in small delegation. The reason cited by police officials to the farmers is the traffic congestion and law & order situation.

Land which helps in providing the ‘bread and butter’ to a farmer is the reason behind this mass march. 850 acres of land of farmers were, allegedly, acquired by Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) for phase 1 of Krishna Khore Irrigation Project. Later 830 acres of land was again acquired by MIDC for the phase 2. Farmers have been fighting against the land acquisition since decades as they have already lost their lands in many other projects.

Udayanraje Bhosale, Member of Parliament (MP) of NCP from Satara constituency, has written a letter to Chief Minister (CM), Devendra Fadnavis, on the condition of farmers who are against the forceful acquisition of their land by the government. In his letter, he has requested CM Fadnavis to remove the land of farmers from the acquisition proposal. He has also mentioned that farmers have already suffered a lot in the Krishna Valley irrigation project and had lost 100 acres of land in National Highway. “Farmers have already been suffered by the Krishna Valley irrigation projects. Again 100 acre land from the same villages were acquired for building National Highway and they were given very less compensation. Hence, the land should be removed from the acquisition,” Bhosale said on the issue, quoted The Free Press Journal.
