Those long and dense moustaches, especially, the handlebar moustaches were in fashion trend during British rule which we have witnessed through the movies picturizing policemen in that era. The trend seem to be reinforced in Uttar Pradesh policemen through an incentive plan. Earlier, Uttar Pradesh Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) men used to get Rs. 50 for maintaining their moustache but if the Singh’s proposal gets a nod, they will start getting Rs. 250 for sporting the thick, long and twirly moustaches. Singh, affirmed, “Moustaches boosts the personality of the man and adds a tougher look which is necessary for a policeman,”. Singh came up with this idea when he met 5 PAC cops with dense and twirly moustaches at Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. He was amazed with the passion of middle aged policemen who have kept the tradition alive. “It’s all about the morale of the policemen. If their morale is up, they will give you better performance and result. After taking over in PAC on January 11, I went to Prayagraj where I met a few middle-aged police personnel whose passion to sport such moustaches was amazing,” Singh said on his likes for moustache growing police personnel, quoted TOI. He further said that he had started the reward system for policemen keeping moustaches when he was the commander of 35th battalion of 2006-07 PAC. As the head of PAC police force in Uttar Pradesh, he thinks that the trend of keeping dense and big moustache has declined off-lately which should be revived.
