In a Joint press conference on Saturday, BSP supremo Mayawati and SP president Akhilesh Yadav formally announced that they would fight for 38 seats each out of 80 seats leaving Amethi and Raebareli for Congress in the upcoming general election. Addressing the conference in Lucknow, Mayawati said that Congress party is not a part of the alliance as it is not beneficial in winning seats and can result in losses. Thus, closing all the doors for Congress party in the tie-up for Lok Sabha poll 2019 is the best way forward, according to SP & BSP. She further said that this alliance is for people’s interest and for the sake of the country. This alliance will fulfill people’s demands and people have faith and hope in it, she added.

Mayawati also mentioned about the infamous 1995 Lucknow guest house incident in which she was attacked by SP workers. Back then, she took a pledge that she will never ally with the SP in future, however, she is joining hands with SP for the betterment of the Uttar Pradesh people and nation, she said.

She flayed BJP for their narrow and communal policies as she alleged them of being anti-people and anti-dalit. On the other hand, Akhilesh said that Union and State governments are doing the politics of caste and religion in order to win elections.

Total vote share of SP and BSP is more than 40% and exceeds that of BJP, according to the previous poll result. Mayawati and Akhilesh stressed that SP-BSP alliance is long term and permanent, it will carry forward in 2022 UP polls too. Akhilesh also thanked Mayawati for the alliance formula and giving equal seats for the fight. He claimed that all the sections of society are suffering under the BJP government and is looking for a change. Notably, it’s been 26 years that the two rivals have joined hands to contest election together with an aim to stop BJP’s ‘Vijay Rath’. Earlier, Mulayam Singh and Kanshi Ram allied to contest election and registered a massive victory in 1993 election. So the question is whether the ‘Bua-Bhatija’ of UP will be able to repeat the history by this alliance.

Yogi Adiyanath called this alliance for anarchy, corruption and political instability in the state. “Those who did not like each other are talking about a Maha Gathbandhan (grand alliance). This is an alliance for corruption, anarchy and political instability.” he reacted to the news of SP-BSP alliance, TV reports quoted.

This election is all about showcasing power and gaining vote. No doubt, alliance and ‘Mahagathbandhan’ is going to give a tough competition to the BJP government.
