Mehbooba Mufti calls NIA’s declaration of Suspects as Terrorists based on Recovery of “Sutli Bombs” Premature

Among the cache of arms and ammunition recovered in the raids, there were other materials like swords, knives and firecrackers. Some part of netizens including some renowned personalities from politics made a mockery of NIA by calling the suspects planning an ISIS-inspired terrorist module using 'sutli bombs' (firecrackers) a matter of suspicion. Mehbooba took a swipe at NIA's action on the suspects and said that declaring suspects 'terrorists' on the basis of recovering sutli bombs and linking it with ISIS is premature.

The nation went shocked on December 26 after National Investigation Agency (NIA) revealed that they busted an ISIS-inspired terrorist module, Harkat-ul-Herb-e-Islam, and arrested 10 persons in connection to the agenda including the mastermind, Mufti Sohail. The materials NIA recovered from the group after raiding 17 locations in Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Delhi, included 12-locally made pistols, 100 mobile phones, locally made rocket launcher, 135 SIM cards, mobile phone circuits, pipes, steel containers, laptops and around 25kg of explosives.

Among the cache of arms and ammunition recovered in the raids, there were other materials like swords, knives and firecrackers. Some part of netizens including some renowned personalities from politics made a mockery of NIA by calling the suspects planning an ISIS-inspired terrorist module using ‘sutli bombs’ (firecrackers) a matter of suspicion. Notably, while exhibiting the cache of arms and ammunition recovered in the raids at several important places in UP and Delhi, NIA displayed firecrackers as one of the ammunition used by the suspects for their agenda. This became the topic of sarcasm for many on social media. The same sarcasm was reportedly seen on Friday when the former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti, tweeted a series of tweets regarding NIA’s claim of busting an ISIS-inspired terrorist module.

Mehbooba took a swipe at NIA’s action on the suspects and said that declaring suspects ‘terrorists’ on the basis of recovering sutli bombs and linking it with ISIS is premature. “National security is supreme. But declaring suspects as terrorists on the basis of sutli bombs, associating (them) with the dreaded (ISIS) is premature,” tweeted Mehbooba Mufti on Friday from her Twitter handle. Mehbooba further continued by calling the NIA’s move proving to be devastating for those arrested and their families, reminding NIA about those suspects in the past who were acquitted by the respective court of law after a long trial. “It has already devastated their lives and families. NIA must learn from earlier episodes in which the accused were acquitted after decades,” advised Mehbooba to NIA through her another tweet.

Mehbooba also called the arrests during the election season a ‘suspicious activity’ and said that national security is best served by being just and inclusive. “Arrests by NIA during election season do raise suspicion, especially after the urban Naxal case seems to be falling apart. National security is best served by being just and inclusive, not suspicious of an entire community,” Mehbooba tweeted.
