The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ruled Gujarat brought a good news for the financially challenged residents of rural as well as urban parts, who are incapable of paying off their electricity bill dues. The state government has decided to write off the dues of around 6.22 lac rural consumers who are unable to pay their electricity bill and whose electricity connections are cut-off for non-payment of their dues.
Talking on the move, the state energy minister, Saurabh Patel, highlighted how the move will benefit the beneficiaries in the state. “We are announcing a one-time settlement scheme. Today, electricity connection of around 6.22 lac have been cut; they can deposit Rs. 500 under a one-time settlement scheme and get back their connection. In urban areas both BPL and non-BPL families will be able to avail this benefit. The government will have to bear a burden of Rs. 625 crore,” Patel was quoted saying by news agency ANI.
The move is speculated to be inspired by the Delhi government where the electricity is cheaper than that in the other states of the country. Currently, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is governing the nation’s capital with their robust electricity consumption regulation.
The move is also linked to BJP’s recent tragic loss of power in the prominent states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, earlier ruled by BJP until it was dislodged from the throne of the states by it’s biggest rival, Congress party. The Congress party had promised loan waiver of the farmers within 10 days of forming their government in Madhya Pradesh which the party has fulfilled just hours after Kamal Nath formed his government in the state. The experts opine that BJP doesn’t want people’s attention to turn towards Congress party’s fulfilment of promises made in their 2018 manifesto. Hence, the news of BJP-led Gujarat government writing-off electricity bill dues in the state for 6.22 lac people, will sure bring a big relief to the state’s people and make a strong comeback of the party.
