70 Lakh Women from Odisha to get free Smartphones under Mission Shakti Project, CM Patnaik Announces

Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik, announced that his government will distribute free smartphones to around 70 lakh women under Mission Shakti programme. The programme was launched in 2001 with the objective of economic empowerment of women through Self Help Groups (SHGs) which enables loan facility at low interest rates to the women for livelihood opportunities. It is claimed that there are 70 lakh women working with 6 lakh SHGs, which has helped women save 5,000 crores and bank exposure of 2000 crores.

Patnaik was in ‘Make in Odisha’ conclave on Wednesday and was addressing the Women Entrepreneurship Sectorial session when he announced the distribution of free smartphones to around 70 lakh women working with 6 lakh SHG)ls across the state. Emphasizing on women empowerment in the digital sector, Patnaik addressed the need to make women from Odisha at par with the digitisation. “Women empowerment is something that is very close to my heart, no household, no society, no state, and no country has ever moved forward without empowering it’s women,” said Patnaik in the conclave, quoted ANI.

He further went ahead to speak for the journey of women in his state to today and hence, through Mission Shakti programme, the women will be empowered to conquer the need for the digitisation. “Our women have come a long way and the next ceiling to be broken is the digital one, my government is aware that digital empowerment will further accelerate the socio-political and economic empowerment of women,” added Patnaik during his speech at ‘Make in Odisha’ conclave.
