Tamil Nadu’s 19-year-old college girl falls off 2nd floor and dies during a safety drill. A 19-year-old college girl died in Coimbatore district on Thursday, July 12, after she was forced to jump off the second floor of her private educational institute during a disaster preparedness drill.
The deceased name has been identified as N. Logeswari. Logeswari, a second year BBA student at the Kalaimagal College of Arts and Science was made to sit on the ledge of the second floor, while other students from the college waited below with a safety net. “When she was reluctant to jump off the second floor, trainer, who was standing behind her, pushed her even as she was clearly not prepared for the jump,” police said. The trainer, R Arumugam, has been taken into custody.
After the incident, the girl was taken into a nearby government hospital by her classmates where she was pronounced dead. According to police, the girl suffered from serious injuries on her head and right neck.
“A Disaster Management Authority from Chennai was conducting the training. They have done the same drill in several other colleges for the past five years,” says the investigating official. “Several of them did it before her and nothing happened to them. This was an accident,” he added.
Five students had already jumped successfully on to the safety net when the drill started at 3 pm. The college block where the training was conducted had three floors and students were jumping off the second floor. A total of 20 students were part of the training which was announced 45 days back.
The police have filed a case under section 304(a) for causing death by negligence. When asked if action will be taken against the college, the police said that further investigation is required in the matter.
Similar incident happened in the year 2012 in Bangalore, where a 22-year-old woman, who volunteered for a mock fire rescue drill on the premises of a private garment factory, fell to her death at the Peenya Industrial Estate even as the fire services department watched the incident helplessly.
