Burari Murder Mystery, the case that sent shock waves across India’s capital took place on Sunday, when the National Capital woke up to this horrendous news i.e. 11 members of the same family were found hanging in the courtyard of their house in Sant Nagar of Burari, Delhi. 11 members including four male and 7 female members were found dead, blindfolded and hanging from an iron grill ceiling at their house.
Is it really a suicide case or something else? Let’s get into the details of this case and try to get our answers..
Who all were found dead?
Deceased members included elderly and children of the Bhatia family residing in 137/5/2, Gali number 4A, Sant Nagar, Burari, Delhi. Narayan Devi, the oldest member of the family, 75 year old, was found lying dead alone in another room. Other members including Pratibha, 60 years old, d/o Narayan Devi; Priyanka, 30, d/o Pratibha; Bhavnesh Bhatia, 46, s/o Narayan Devi; Savita Bhatia, 42, w/o Bhavnesh; Nitu Bhatia, 24, d/o Bhavnesh; Meenu Bhatia, 22, d/o Bhavnesh; Shivam,12, s/o Bhavnesh; Lalit Bhatia, 42, s/o Narayan Devi; Tina Bhatia, 38, w/o Lalit; Dhruv Bhatia,12, s/o Lalit, were found hanging together. Rajesh Khurana, Joint Commissioner of Police, said, “Some of them were found hanging from an iron grill ceiling (used as ventilator) in the courtyard while others were lying on the floor with their hands and legs tied,” Out of all those who were present in the house only their pet dog survived, he was found tied on the terrace was suffering from fever.
How was it discovered?
Bhatia family runs a grocery shop in the ground floor of their house which usually opens by 6 am, but on Sunday, the shop was not open by 7:30. When a neighbor who went to purchase milk that day, found the shop closed, he went upstairs and discovered the bodies. Police was then informed of this shocking incident. The spot was visited by Arvind Kejriwal, Chief Minister of Delhi and Delhi Unit Chief of Bhartiya Janta Party, Manoj Tiwary. Kejriwal said, “Neighbours, people around, say that the family had no enmity with anybody. We have to wait for the post mortem report to say anything on this incident,” Manoj Tiwary expressing his grief over the incident said, “Very sad and tragic incident at Burari, 11 lives lost.. Deepest condolences.”
What neighbours have to say for the family?
Neighbours and people around said that Bhatia family was a religious family and they had no enmity with anyone. “Bhupinder (Bhavnesh) and Lalit couldn’t have committed suicide. I spoke to Bhupinder last night, he was very happy and there was no sign of any stress,” said one of the neighbour. Rajendra Tyagi, another neighbour told the reporters that Bhatia family did not have any financial problems and was a satisfied family, “Even when their kids studied, there were no issues of school fees. Till date, they never even had a small argument with anybody, forget about having grudges.” said the neighbor.

Delhi Police is trying to investigate the case with consideration of all possible angles as missing out on any evidence or clue will deviate the case from it’s real cause. No discovery of any suicide note further adds to mystery of the case. Regarding this, Rajesh Khurana, Joint Commissioner of Police, said, “Prima Facie, we suspect they committed suicide but we are also investigating the case with other possible angles of homicide. We are not ruling out anything. We are also checking the CCTV footages,” There is bewilderment that whether murder case should be filed or not but when the police confirmed that Narayan Devi was strangled to death, murder case was filed.
Following the deep investigation of the case, there were certain suspicions that came out. There is a possibility of a link with occult practices as during the house search certain handwritten religious notes were found by the police that pointed towards observance of suicide for mass salvation of the family. “Coincidently, the notes have strong similarity with the manner in which the mouth, eyes, etc.. of the deceased were tied and taped” read the communique.
This isn’t a case of murder after theft as women were found wearing gold jewelry. Police also said that there could be a possibility that one member killed rest of the members and later committed suicide. These are only suspicions and nothing can be confirmed as of now.
Though the notes that were found indicate suicide for mass salvation, there are certain loopholes in the case which are yet to be filled. Below are some of the questions regarding the case that have not yet found their answers.
1. Biggest question that arises after understanding the case is that ‘How come no relative was aware or even got a slightest of hint of such spiritual practices going on in the house,’ Even Sujata Nagpal, Narayan’s daughter who lives in Panipat had no clue about what was going on in the family in this context. She said that she talked to her brother, Lalit on Saturday at 11pm but then too he told her nothing about family’s drive to attain mass salvation. Police quizzed friends and relatives to find out if any member of the Bhatia family mentioned any such thing to them.
2. Another question is that how were the teenage children were convinced by the family to take such a step because investigations of the officers till now do not reveal any signs of struggle.
3. There is another mystery regarding how 11 people agreed to take their lives and even allowed their family to die in front of them at the same time.
4. It was also reported that Priyanka’s wedding was fixed and her engagement was also celebrated. If family had any such plans of seeking mass salvation then why would they fix her wedding?
As of now, nothing can be said with surety about what happened and how did it happen till the autopsy reports are received as they will play a crucial role and will for sure give a new direction to the case because police haven’t ruled out the possibility of use of poison.
